Is This Just Beak Growth?

Postby Scotty » Thu Apr 04, 2013 9:18 pm

Hi Guys,

BeBe my GCK I've just started to notice that it seems like her beak is getting longer, more of a pointed hook growing down even further...

Where I drew the red line pointing to the white line area, this is where the beak use to end, now below it, all this has grown.

I'm assuming this is just normal beak growth?

Also her bottom beak you can see has this white growth of a line, is there a way to take care of this? Because I've seen in some birds the beaks getting really bad and scaling looking...

THANKS

The length of the beak looks normal to me. My GCC's beak is about that long.

The white/grey lines are also normal as far as I know. My GCC has similar lines on his top and bottom beak although they are not quite as pronounced.

The thing about green cheeks is they are generally not really active chewers and when your bird spends a lot of time chewing things (especially wood) it helps keep the beak nice and smooth. My Poi chews and chews all day on paper, soft wood, and harder wood and his beak is totally smooth.

My GCC will sometimes chew on paper and occasionally wood but not for long periods of time so his beak isn't as smooth.

You can get a soft file and GENTLY buff and smooth the ridges so they are less pronounced but to be honest they look pretty normal and I don't think it's necessary.

Its definitely normal imo.

Last year, just after the summer, I too worried about beak growth. Both of the birds beaks had grown, and I didnt know if there was something wrong. Visited the vet, as well as posted here on the forums, and the vet said there was nothing abnormal with either bird's beak.
Since then the beaks havent grown any further.

Your guy's beak looks to be just normal in length to me!

Agree with the others, it will sort itself out. Ollie looked like he was wearing a thick shell on his not so long ago but its fine again now.
