Switching parrot foods?

Postby paper_lantern » Mon Apr 08, 2013 4:40 pm

Chubby has been on Tropican Lifetime Granules for Parrots since I adopted him a year ago. The pellet seems ok, but since it's not a well known brand I decided to switch to Roudybush Adult Daily Maintenance Diet. Is this an okay brand of food? I just ordered a 44oz bag to start off with.

How do I go about introducing this food to him? He isn't usually a picky eater and tries vegetables, fruits, and grains whenever I give him something new. I know I can't just switch one food for another very suddenly. So how do I go about this?

Thanks!

Try mixing it with his first pellets, then after a day or two gradually add more of the new pellets until its just the new pellets there instead of the old. :)

The above method works for some birds but not all, they just pick around it and then starve when seeds aren't in enough quantity. Another method is to give them seeds (or their regualr food) for one hour in the morning and then leave the pellets (or new food) in for the rest of the day. Place the bowl with pellets or new food nearest to where you sit (when you eat he eats)- at least this is the case with our cockatiels and other birds we have owned. In the evening give seeds for one hour again. When pellets are getting nibbled enough to sustain the bird stop the morning seeds or old food and only give in the evening. Keep an eye on the weight and every 3rd day perhaps top him up with some seeds so he doesn't starve.
