baby noises or something to worry about?

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Tue Apr 09, 2013 6:29 am

So our new baby has started chirping but his voice or chirp sounds really different to Edmund's. Like more unclear, perhaps a bit strained/raspy and quietier. I've checked his breathing and lungs, our vet showed us how to hear through his back. I can't hear any raspiness or clicking inside using my ears. He has no discharge in the nose and doesn't have any excessive sneezing (he has sneezed a couple of times but its not wet) and no tail bobbing or open mouthed breathing. He's eating and drinking well and is active (although a little nervous). He beak grinds and rests/sleeps on one foot. Never at the bottom of the cage and can fly ok, not brilliantly just yet! His eyes are bright and he has clean vent and beak. He preens very well. His mouth seems clear without any slime and throat and crop seem fine to me no redness or regurgitation. He empties his crop after eating doing that wierd yawning thing.

I have heard him to do 4-5 clear contacts calls, one at half 6 this morning... was not impressed LOL. Otherwise its these little noises which make me worry if there's something wrong. They like chittering but not clear. I will take him to the vet for his new bird check up soon but this is at 30 days and I don't want to stress him unnecessarily. He only just arrived and moving him again would probably be really stressful. At 30 days he will get the full check before he goes into same room as Edmund. He doesn't do it often enough to get a video but it sounds almost as if he was doing it on a radio and the radio had a bad reception like static. The only thing close it that Edmund does it when he's being restrained by the vet and that wierd growling thing.

Is it just because he's a baby and his chirps aren't quite evolved yet?
Is he just finding his voice?
I called the vet today but he not there so will call back tomorrow for advice. Called the breeder who said its probably just baby noises and that their chirps can sound like that for a little bit. He did recommend to watch him in case but he said if it was a crop problem he wouldn't be eating or drinking like he is. He is under guarantee until he is 1 year but that's not the point to me.

Aw bless him, he is probably still a little unsettled in his new environment and wants to practice his voice but doesn't want to draw too much attention to himself by being loud and also it could be baby noises too. Doesn't sound like anything to worry about but I can understand why you feel on edge atm. Never hurts to keep an eye and ear on things but try not to drive yourself crazy in the process :)

Yeah. Edmund was a baby when we got him and he didn't make those noises. We will call the vet tomorrow for advice anyway but he does do some clear calls so I'm pretty sure its just baby noise. The only other thing that bothers me slightly is his poops are fairly large. Could this be from the eggfood supplement? The poops are healthy colour, urates are white-cream and urine is clear. We have a vial so we probably going to take a poop sample to the vet before the 30days. There's no need to take the bird for this so that's ok.

Anyway we call call the avian vet tomorrow so he'll have some advice then.
