Is it ok to feed my parrot these beans?

Postby paper_lantern » Tue Apr 09, 2013 5:13 pm

I bought some black beans and pinto beans, and soaked them overnight (over 12 hours). I then boiled them with the lid on for 15 minutes, then the lid off for 10 minutes, and again with the lid on for 20 minutes. Afterwards I rinsed them with fresh water.

I'm just a bit paranoid about feeding them to him now because I know if they aren't cooked completely they are toxic. Does this seem like a good amount of time to cook them?

Really? Tidymix soak mix has pinto beans in and it says you can feed them raw. I always feed them raw on a regular basis and had no problems.
I Don't know about the black beans though unless they are the same as blackeye beans which again is in the tidymix. They may be a different type of bean.

Really? I heard the bigger beans (Pinto, Kidney, etc) should be thoroughly cooked before feeding and NOT sprouted because they contain enzymes which inhibit protein absorption and digestion.

I just assumed black beans were among the types of beans which require cooking. Hmmmmm so many different opinions out there. I'll wait until I get more replies before feeding these beans, I'm just so paranoid when it comes to my bird's health. :P

Sorry wasn't being sarky, was just late at night and all I meant is what sources do you have regarding the toxicity of the beans.

It's uncooked rice and pastas and lentils/pulses that should be cooked through. Larger beans are fine raw... at least they were when we fed them to our birds.

I feed cooked black beans and have many times without a problem. I've never fed them raw or sprouted, though.

There is a cookbook called easy beans and another called more easy beans it has the cooking times for different types of beens. If you use the search insude function on amazon you may be able to see the cooking times given in the cook book more easy beans. Of course these are reciepies for human consuption, but i would not be suprized if the cooking times may be similar for parrots.

its just a thought.

Thank you everyone! Chubby didn't care for the black beans, he threw most of them on the floor of his cage. But he loved the Pinto beans and ate several. :)

It's kidney beans that are toxic if cooked long enough, for humans anyway
