Found an avian vet close to home! Question about check ups

Postby paper_lantern » Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:13 pm

So I previously thought the closest avian vet was 5 hours away. I brought my cat for a check up this morning at our local vet and asked about avian vets. She said there is a traveling vet who also works with exotic pets (birds, rabbits, etc). So I called her up and sure enough she does see parrots.

I made an appointment for the 2nd of May, she will be coming here. It's just for a checkup/nail trimming.

I do have a few questions since I've never seen an avian vet before. What does a check up entail for a bird? Do I have to get blood work done during a checkup? If so, how do they get the blood. Chubby is good with me and the immediate family, however when it comes to strangers he gets very nippy and angry. How do your vets handle your scared or nippy parrots?

I guess I just need to know what to expect. Should I prepare a stool sample? Chubby isn't sick or showing signs of sickness, I just want a general check up.

Also, I just ordered a parrot scale! :)

My avian vet gives gas to knock the bird out briefly when taking blood & cutting nails.
