I eat a lot of tomatoes and naturally Marvin, my Sennie, is atrracted to the color and the fact that they're on my plate. I know the plant itself is toxic to birds but I've read mixed reviews on the fruit. Anybody here have input? Marvin is dying to try them and we have a bit of a wrestling match every time I'm eating one.
I used to give mine tomato, I don't any more though because I'm not sure what to make of all the debate about it. Best to keep it small and occasional if you do give him any.
Thanks. Good plan. I'll do it only rarely and avoid the seeds and skin, which are the parts most likely to be causing the debate. If his droppings look "off", then no more.
Feeding a parrot cooked or dried tomatoes (as in sauces, on pizza) is deemed safe but there's avian vets out there who claim to never feed a parrot raw tomatoes. The reason why is because some parrots will respond violently to ingesting raw tomatoes and get very sick. It doesn't seem to happen often but better safe than sorry, I say.
