Edmund bruised foot :-( advice- yes i've called the vet ;-)

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Fri May 03, 2013 7:34 am

Ok so there was a slight mishap changing the waterbowl today. Edmund has been molting and there's loads of feathers falling in the waterbowl so we changing it a lot. The door on the cage didn't quite shut and Edmund grabbed hold of the swing door (Montana cage) and pulled it back onto his own foot!

Eric immediately freed him and picked him up. Apparently he held it up for a while so Eric examined him. He didn't scream or cry when Eric examined it and soon he went back to eating drinking and climbing as normal. He seems to grip the same with both feet- maybe slightly lighter with the 'hurt foot'

We rang the vet but neither avian vet was available, only the exotic vet. He said its probably just slightly bruised as he is not holding it up or limping there shouldn't be a problem.

I was just wondering if there is anything else we can to check or any further precautions we should take.

When Truman had a fractured pelvis, I had to keep him in a shallow tub (for short term a carrier or box is fine) so that he wouldn't climb. He was in clear agony and wouldn't step on that foot. So if you want to play it safe and ensure things heel quicker, you can try putting the bird in a small, shallow, warm place with nowhere to climb for 48 hours. What you don't want to happen is him falling off a perch in the cage cause leg is week and then hurting it further.

Ok I will try that. I doubt if he'll stay there he seems pretty intent on climbing, jumping and winging upside down. I might line the cage with some padding as well so if he does climb and fall he'll land on something soft. He's been hanging upside down off it this afternoon though with no problems and he seems in no pain whatsoever. There's no visible signs but you can never be too careful.... He will still go upside down in his travel carrier too!

I will do what you advise anyway to be safe. Thanks :-)

And watch the weight. Truman seemed ok at first but within 24 hours was spiraling downhill. Very low weight by 48 hours.

OK. Will monitor very closely. We had a good feel around but you're right you never know. It's not a heavy door but it probably hurt a bit. I will definitely call the avian vet tomorrow for advice and I will go straight to the emergency unit if it gets really bad.

He's now gripping equally with both feet and there's no swelling or bruising. He sits well on both feet and eating and drinking normally. Eric had a good feel around the leg and he didn't flinch once but I know what birds can be like.

I will heed your advice :-) Thanks Michael

Doesn't sound that bad to me either, but just saying what I was told to do by vet and did for a serious injury. Take the precautions for 48 hours and if he's fine, then no more need to worry about it.

Got hold of an avian vet! (not the usual one) She said is probably just bruised and just to monitor closely and move all his perches and food closer to the ground which we've done. Yet he still insists going to the top and swinging upside while chirping! Sigh... I guess he's fine but thanks for the advice Michael :-) I might take the precautions any way just in case.
