Please help, something is wrong with Daisy's right wing

Postby hlasdf » Sat May 04, 2013 2:46 pm

Hey everyone! I haven't posted in a while, but I'm back for now. Since last night, Daisy's right wing had been twitching and she was making those loud lovebird whiny-chirpy noises they make when they're in pain. I decided to take a look at her wing so I spread it - much to her protest - and saw a single, full feather sticking out in the middle of where her flight feathers were clipped a while ago. I thought at first that one of her wing feathers that hadn't been clipped was just misplaced and overlapping the others, causing her great discomfort. So I tried moving around the feather to get it back to wherever it was supposed to be, but it felt like it was stuck there like it was supposed to be a flight feather. But if it is, how come it just suddenly appeared? It wasn't there the day before or early yesterday. And why would it be causing her so much pain? I'm assuming it's the cause of her pain because she seemed okay this morning until I tried to check her wing again and touched that feather, making her start to cry and bite everything in her sight again. Do flight feathers just grow much quicker than other feathers? And if that's the case, could she be in pain because it's a cracked blood feather? I'm really worried but don't have time today to take her to a vet. If anyone knows what's going on, please help.

Pin feathers can be incredibly irritating and are very sensitive especially wing and tail feather. Edmund screeches when he accidentally bites one during preening. Maybe you could ring the vet for advice and the an give you some advice over the phone. Unless the feather is obviously damaged don't remove it.

Is it normal for wing feathers to grow extremely quickly, or to cause that much pain even when not being touched?

Can you take a picture so we can see? I'm having a hard time visualizing it.

They can grow very quick once they have broken through the skin and they can be vet painful when touched but it could be an infected follicle or polyfollocilitis where more than once feather grows from the same place.

I would definitely get it checked though. In case she has damaged the quill on the inside. At least a phone call with the vet is a must and preferably a visit. If you can get some
Pictures that would be great

One of the undesirable consequences of clipping is that the normal molting process is disrupted so, sometimes, they would drop and start regrowing feathers out of order. This established order is necessary because a feather that grows in the middle of clipped or missing feathers will not have the support of the other feathers around it and it can become askew and cause a lot of pain (this is the reason why some clipped birds would start plucking the regrowing primaries). I think this is what might be happenning here. Why don't you just clip it at the same height as the other clipped ones?

Ah, I see. This seems like the likely answer to her problem along with Eric&Rebecca's answer about how they grow very quickly. I'm just glad to know it's probably not something like a fractured wing. Thanks!

I would take a picture for you guys, but every time I inspect her wing, it sends her into another few hours of pain and I don't think it's worth it. Sorry guys! But basically, it's just one full feather smack dab in the middle of clipped feathers, so it's very easy to notice.

I can't remember seeing why is she clipped? Do you just prefer it that way or is there a medical reason?
