Flax Seed

Postby KimberlyAnn » Wed May 29, 2013 11:17 pm

There is a ton of debate over flax seed and how we as humans can digest it. We know we can't get any nutrition out of whole flax seed. If it's crushed to a powder, there is some debate if we can still get nutrition out of it. Some say to soak it to release the nutrients and get rid of the blockers, but then it's slimy and Emmi hates it. Sprouting it can be hard and it takes a long time. It's so far the best method for human digestion.

Anyone know how birds digest flax seed? I know this is a shot in the dark...but any information on this that's out there? I noticed most people give it whole and that's the most natural state. But we can digest food better then birds can. Can they get the nutrients from whole flax seed?

My GCC hull them, they prefer hemp seeds ( which they hull as well)
Their favorite is safflower seeds, I noticed them picking the seeds out first out of the mixes and after looking far and wide for safflower alone, I found the in a "wild bird seed store " at 10$ for 3 lbs bag :)
Safflower is what I use for tricks and such...:)
