My little boy Kiwi died suddenly Monday morning and I don't even know what happened but I wanted to share my story and his symptoms so maybe his passing may save another bird s life
I have 3 GCC s and Monday was exactly a year since they came home with me.
Last Sunday, I noticed that Kiwi wasn t acting like himself. He is the most lively of the 3 but on that day he remained relatively still. I first noticed something was wrong because he was "fluffed up" and sitting rather calmly around his siblings in the early afternoon.
I checked his droppings , they were frequent however they were milky and appearsd slightly curddled with no poop( brown or green)
I live in the country far from any avian vet but I have a mobile vet and so I called her immediately.
Her answering machine came on, saying that she would be unavailable for most of the day, I left a message with details.
Kiwi was still eating and drinking water, he also came to me for his favorite treats ( safflower seeds) and ate them so I figured things weren't that bad. I did notice that he would not clean her beak off as usual
I also noticed he was looking for the others affection and would cuddle up every chance he got.
We had company that day so I kept the birds separate and covered their cage early so he would get extra rest, I checked on him before "tucking them in" and kiwi seemed stable. I committed to finding her a vet ASAP the next morning as it would be Monday.
In the morning I uncovered the cage and found my little baby dead. I am so heart broken and I hope he didn't t suffer much as I have learned that birds hide their sickness.
I this letter helps someone. I knew that a consistently fluffed up conure ment a possible problem, sadly only today did I come across a blog that said that a conure that remains fluffed for no apparent reason is a sign of an emergency and to take to vet immediately.
