My Kiwi suddenly died

Postby AuraKiwi&Jala » Fri May 31, 2013 8:36 pm

My little boy Kiwi died suddenly Monday morning and I don't even know what happened but I wanted to share my story and his symptoms so maybe his passing may save another bird s life
I have 3 GCC s and Monday was exactly a year since they came home with me.
Last Sunday, I noticed that Kiwi wasn t acting like himself. He is the most lively of the 3 but on that day he remained relatively still. I first noticed something was wrong because he was "fluffed up" and sitting rather calmly around his siblings in the early afternoon.
I checked his droppings , they were frequent however they were milky and appearsd slightly curddled with no poop( brown or green)
I live in the country far from any avian vet but I have a mobile vet and so I called her immediately.
Her answering machine came on, saying that she would be unavailable for most of the day, I left a message with details.
Kiwi was still eating and drinking water, he also came to me for his favorite treats ( safflower seeds) and ate them so I figured things weren't that bad. I did notice that he would not clean her beak off as usual
I also noticed he was looking for the others affection and would cuddle up every chance he got.
We had company that day so I kept the birds separate and covered their cage early so he would get extra rest, I checked on him before "tucking them in" and kiwi seemed stable. I committed to finding her a vet ASAP the next morning as it would be Monday.
In the morning I uncovered the cage and found my little baby dead. I am so heart broken and I hope he didn't t suffer much as I have learned that birds hide their sickness.
I this letter helps someone. I knew that a consistently fluffed up conure ment a possible problem, sadly only today did I come across a blog that said that a conure that remains fluffed for no apparent reason is a sign of an emergency and to take to vet immediately.

I am very sorry to hear about your bird. Thank you for sharing your story. It's a sad fact that we have to learn so much about birds from experience sometimes, but sharing those experiences with other bird owners can only do good. You never know what others already know.

I hope you're doing okay. It sucks that so many of us don't have ready access to the kind of vet care our babies need. Sounds like you did what you could with the knowledge and resources you have. I hope information here on these forums will help you care for your remaining birds. It's the worst case scenario when you have to be sadder to be wiser.

Be well,

Jen

It sounds like you did everything that you should have, how could you predict how quickly an illness would set in? I'm so, so sorry for your loss & I thank you for reliving it to tell us about it, which I'm sure was not easy. But like you said, you may make that difference and save a life. All the things you did on his last day showed him you loved him very much. No one can know if he suffered, but either way - his last day he knew love and what is more important than that? Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.
My condolences <3

I am so very very sorry. How heart breaking. I wonder what happened? Are your other green cheeks showing any signs of illness? Do they notice Kiwi is gone?

It s been 6 days since we lost our little Kiwi. As you can imagine I have been following Aura &Nemo very closely and no symtoms..they seem perfect, thank goodness!
They don t seem to miss him? Even the day he passed they seemed ok, I guess 2 makes more sence in the Birdy world...
I was alway worried that the day would come when I might have to separate them.
Anyway, Kiwi is in bird heaven now , I miss him
For those of you out there with aGCC, I am posting a link I wish I had red before he passed, I hope it save a fellow Conure.
