EMERGENCY

Postby hlasdf » Wed Jun 19, 2013 7:23 pm

I've been sobbing for a couple hours because I was sure Daisy was about to die in my hands after she hurt her neck(I think it's her neck). She kept bending it at weird angles and flapping her wings. I think she went into shock for a bit because her eyes were extremely wide open - much wider than they'd ever been - and her heart was racing. Soon only her right eye was just barely open. When we wrapped her up in a blanket to take her to the nearest vet, she opened them both normally for a few seconds before closing one up again. The nearest bird clinic is an hour away and closes at 5PM (it's 5:17PM) so we have no choice but to wait until tomorrow but what if she dies by then?! We tried taking her to a regular vet nearby but they said they couldn't do anything about it. Things have calmed down since she got hurt and she's sleeping in a towel with her neck at a normal angle but I'm afraid that... she won't wake up... For now I'm checking about every 30 seconds to see some movement under her eyelids and so for so good. I'm afraid to move her anywhere or get her to eat or drink. I'm very scared that this may be my last day with her. I can't stop crying and I can't stop worrying.

Try to find an emergency bird clinic. They're open 24/7.

Did she fly into something? I agree, call an emergency vet and go. Just to make sure she is ok. And I'm so sorry :(

First of all, I hope she made it and getting better but, my dear, next time, post the details of what happened because we might be able (collectively) to come up with something that could tide her over. But, just so you know, when a bird is hurt or has a stroke or a seizure, the very first thing you need to do is keep them calm, quiet and VERY warm. Don't go around pulling your hair, crying and carrying on because you will make things worse for them. A quiet (but also very familiar) and dark (they feel less vulnerable if they can 'hide') spot with a nice heating pad on the bottom of the cage (take the perches out and make the bottom nice and cushiony with a folded, clean towel -you should always keep a clean towel handy, one that was not put in the dryer with a dryer sheet or softener in the rinse cycle). Don't try to put anything in the beak unless you are an experienced hand-feeder (the bird could aspirate, otherwise).

I hope it wasn't the bars separation that caused this but I've been worrying about it since you posted the picture of the new cage because I once had a budgie that died that way (she lived cage-free in the birdroom but she got her head stuck while perching on the top of a big cage and, by the time I found her, she was dead of a broken neck).

I've just replied to you cage thread then seen this :(

I'm so sorry your going through this, keep daisy warm, quiet and as stress free as possible until you can see your vet but in the meantime I would actively seek out other emergency clinics if you haven't already.
Keep us updated please.
