Took Kiwi to the vet and found out, the spot on his chest is a burn crop. when i found out. My heart drop down and dont feel will cause the vet told me to be ready for the worst news however hopefully everything goes will. Have to take kiwi back to the vet on tuesday, to find out when kiwi would be going under surgery. The day I saw the spot I did not get it, Kiwi was flying, eating and behaving normal even now when bandaged up on chest his eating will smaller meals during the day and acting the same as always like nothing wrong.
Would Kiwi be will and live a normal life if the surgery goes smooth?

Hi there, sorry you're going through this. Poor Kiwi.

A couple of questions:

Who handfed the bird? I ask because the person who handfed Kiwi's formula did so incorrectly, as the formula was waaaaay too hot.

Is the bird still on the formula?

Has Kiwi been prescribed antibiotic meds?

Did a fistula occur?

Timing is everything with surgery and crop burn. I think most birds pull through, though. Please keep us updated.

First of all, I am sorry your bird is sick...

However, this is the exact reason a very experienced breeder should only ever hand feed the bird and why parent raised birds are so much better. Mistakes happen with those who are inexperienced even if you've been shown how. The breeder or pet shop or whatever should NEVER have sold you an unweaned bird, and neither should you have purchased it, its actually illegal in most countries now.

If you had been adequately informed by the person you got it from or done your own research you would know that what feels OK to you is not the bird, the crop is extremely sensitive to temperature! What can also happen is if the formula is too thick and just slightly to warm it sits in the crop and gives a slow burning effect.

Crop burn is treatable and well done for going to the vet. I can see that you have learnt from this mistake.

Birds will continue to behave normally, they hide their illness right up until its too late which includes eating playing and pretending all is OK. Hopefully Kiwi will pull through, like I said it is treatable. Please do keep us updated.

If your AV is good, he will pull through. My AV had a too with PDD which had to have his crop practically completely 're-built' three times and he pulled through all three times.

But I second Rebecca's opinion and although I don't mean to make you feel bad, you shouldn't have bought an unweaned bird. Stores and breeders will sell them to you because, to them, they are merchandise and a way to make money so even if you kill the bird, as far as they are concerned, this is just another opportunity to sell you another one but people should do their research thoroughly before committing to something they have no experience on.

I recommend having the bird tested for PDD also as it might be that it's not so much a burn but an ulcer caused by the disease (it's precisely at weaning time that the first symptoms appear)

I second the other comments... I didn't want to jump to conclusions when I asked questions. But I am not replying to make you feel bad, only that I hope your bird will be okay and that others see this post before 1.) buying an unweaned bird and 2.) feeding formula that is too hot and can hurt the bird

Best of luck to you and to Kiwi making a full recovery
