Stinky beak

Postby Happyperson915 » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:16 pm

My meyer parrot has a smelly beak. I just noticed it today, but she hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary. Her beak is also pealing a lot as well. I was told that they peel a lot when they are babies, but combined with the smell I am worried. Is this reason for concern?

What are you feeding the bird? If it's not anything the bird ate, then it could be an infection, such as a fungal infection of the crop. Sounds like a trip to the vet in in order.

She has a mixture of seeds and harrisons for her dry food. As for fresh I usually give her raw broccoli, kale, spinach, carrots, sugar snap peas, a grape, apple, and today she did have a piece of fig for the first time. Could it have been that? For treats its usually different types of seeds. My mom tends to give her peanuts sometimes too (in the shell).

I don't see how any of those would lead to an infection though.

It doesn't sound that serious. Just monitor it, and if it gets worse, take her in. I'm sure your bird is plenty healthy.

Actually a peeling beak can be an indication of something very serious so I wouldn't say it doesn't sound that serious. HOWEVER, there are other situations whcih have a peeling beak that are not. Why don't you give your bird a mist or offer a bath. See if you can wipe the beak clean, tomorrow if the smell is still there then go to the avian vet. My birds smell all over when they have had bananna chips, its usually gone the day after.

Is it a sour smell?- if its a sour smell I would go now. Even if the bird is behaving normally because this could be the sign of a crop or fungal infection.

If it was me, I would go anyway, you can't really put a price on your own peace of mind and being sure your bird is ok...

Sounds like sour crop or a bacterial infection... Take it to an good AV as soon as you can because little things get bigger when not taken care of properly.
