Peppermint oil

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Tue Aug 06, 2013 12:56 pm

So next door have had problems with little mice coming in... it's London and has been raining so they've all headed for shelter. While I keep a very clean house I am sure I've heard some mouse like rustlings...

I've read that peppermint oil keeps them away but I'm concerned out the effect it has on birds? Would this be toxic?

I would say it's safe to have around birds... I use essential oils for my soaps (I make soap) and Tiki was so curious about them and loved the aroma... but I would be cautious nonetheless. I'd sprinkle a little around the house as a barricade. Or try using peppermint leaves instead? Also look into getting mouse traps that capture the mice, not kill them but traps them.

I use the humane traps and they do work. They say you don't need to bait them (and it's true) but I do it anyway.

I have the humane traps in the house but i've definitely heard them scuffling around... I don't want them getting near the birds. I do keep a very clean house... well as clean as you can with birds! I never leave food out and I hoover and mop at least once per day.

Would it be OK just to put the peppermint oil along the skirting boards if it was diluted? I have hte pure organic oil with no added ingredients from the health food store.

I don't see why not... I am sure you watch your birds like a hawk when they are out.
