Freezing/refrigerating seeds

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Thu Aug 15, 2013 7:08 am

So as all the flock now eat more pellets and fresh than seeds I'm finding my seeds aren't keeping as fresh and i'd like. The seed mix i have contain barley flakes, wheat, some lentil type things, dried fruits and veg. Shoudl I freeze or refrigerate for freshness, I already keep them in sealed containers.

Refrigerate, don't freeze. Oil and fats change their chemical structure when they freeze.

i freeze wilzbridge friuty parrot mix in plastic aritight containers i feel better doing this because it ensures there are no bugs in the seed, not that i ever found any before i did this. Although liz freezes all her pet foods to avoid pantry moths.

Some people say that freezing seed for 24 hours is a good idea prior to feeding it to remove bugs. I actally keep any dry fruit or seed in the freezer to try to be sure that it remains fresh.
I read that if seed wil not sprout it is not fresh enough to feed, because the nutrient content is deminished.
