Nutrition help

Is it healthy to give my TAG some red hot chilly? Here we use them to make him talk more and faster. And about the diet, his old owner used to feed him anything ( potato chips, fried chicken, cocked rice, ... ) and sunflower seeds as everyday food. How can i change this for him?

I think they can eat Chilli, however I'm not sure which ones and how to serve it to them, so hopefully someone else can help you out on that.

As for his diet, what do you feed him now?

To change his diet, you can always introduce fresh fruit and veg (research which ones parrots can eat) by giving them from your hand or when there isn't seeds in the cage (because then he will probably go for the seeds rather than the fruit and veg).

You can also try replacing the seeds with pellets (a much healthier option than seeds) however first you have to get him to like pellets. To do this, feed them from your hand during training or anytime. Then, when he has taken a liking to the pellets, try slowly adding some pellets in his food bowl. Then slowly over the course of a few weeks, try increasing e amount of pellets in his food bowl and decreasing the amount of seeds. Make sure he is eating the pellets though, as well as the seeds, and make sure he is eating enough. If you have any problems, don't hesitate to PM me.

If you don't want to completely replace the seeds with pellets, feed the pellets as well as the seeds occasionally and also feed fruit and veg.

i think boiled chiken is ok to feed a Grey parrot, as protien in small amounts. Fried food is not heathy for parrots. Also avoid foods which contain too much salt and don't feed it avacado cholate or alchol.

My vet also told me to give my :irn: bolled clean chicken bones every now and again, so that she could crack the bones open and eat the bone marrow. I think this would be ok for your grey parrot.

i feed my parrot chillis both fresh and dried because they contain vitamin a which is good for parrots. just be sure that any chillis you give your parrot are NOT MOULDY, as this make the bird very ill.

I wrote another detailed post about calcium in the afican greys diet in your thread entitiled my bird is afraid of wood.

I hope this helps good luck

I think you can feed it whole, but I'm not sure. Maybe you have to take the seeds out?

Please, no meat and most especially no bones! The bone marrow is nothing but fat and protein with a too high content of iron, all bad things for birds which are herbivores and should not consume animal protein. I really do wish Avian Vets would stop giving advice on something they don't know anything about or people would realize that they never really study avian nutrition so, unless we are talking about an avian vet who has had multiple birds for a long period of time and has done a lot of personal research on the subject, they know less about it that most parrot keepers.

I don't believe in pellets been the best option for parrots, I feed gloop, raw produce and a small portion of lower protein seeds with a nut or two and my greys do great on it.

I agree, I just meant that they are a healthier option than seeds.

They are if the option is nothing but seeds or nothing but pellets but, thankfully for the birds, we all know now that regardless of what the main diet is, they need to eat a lot of produce.
