Bleach and vomiting

Postby Tro » Wed Aug 21, 2013 11:00 pm

Hello,
The short question is does chlorine bleach cause a parrot to vomit?

What happend was I brought my parrot w me to my moms house, which I always do when I go over there. She cleaned with bleach the night before and I could still smell it pretty strong but since it was a day ago I didn't worry. But my parrot started vomiting I got him out of the house asap because I couldn't think of why else he would vomit. He was vomiting in the car but hasn't since I got him home we are sitting in my bathroom because I heard steam was good for respiratory irritation and gave him apples( his favorite). I called the avian vet to get him in tomorrow.

Can bleach cause parrots to puke or am i dealing w something else? What else can I do for my parrot until tomorrow?
Thank you so much for any help!

Hello again,
The only avian vet we have in town is not in today  because I live in the middle of nowhere alska there is only one vet in town who will even touch a parrot fortunately he's good, but not in until next tuesday!
My parrot still hasn't thrown up since the car ride back so I'm still wondering was this all caused by the smell of bleach? And what would a vet do for him?
I weighed him he is a good 68g his feathers look good and hes been eating and drinking since last night when got him home. He seems much better but I'm still concerned for him.
Thanks

Well you shouldn't have bleach or any strong smells like that anywhere near a parrot. Tbh f10 disinfectant kills most household nasties anyway and its cheaper than all this human grade fumey crap. The sickness could have been caused by travel sickness or regurgitation behaviour rather than the smell but its still not a good thing to have around your parrot.

There should be no deodorants, perfumes, varnishes, strong smelling cleaning products. Particularly, bleach or pine polishes or cleaners, no non stick Teflon or pans.

thanks for the reply. My parrot is quite the little traveler and goes with me just about everywhere he has never gotten car sick before. I really think it was the bleach that caused the sickness but I know people use it to disinfect their parrots cages and toys so I didn't know it was that dangerous for them until yesterday (assuming that is what was wrong with him.)
As far as other house hold fumes I am careful to not use nonstick Teflon or any candles and things of that nature because I am aware of the dangers in that.
thanks again for the reply I appreciate your help.

Bleach is fine as long as it's not used in excess. I use it myself for cage, walls, windows and floor disinfection in the birdroom because it's the USDA recommended protocol for contagious avian diseases but it only needs to be 1/100 of the water volume to be effective and that produces hardly any smell.

Sorry my apologies yes you can use bleach but there should be very little or no smell and the cage sould be rinsed or aired for long enough to be no smell. What i mean is you shouln't have bleach in its undluted form anywhere near the bird and if you are using it to clean keep it as Parajita suggests :-)
