Cooked or raw?

Postby sindy_tech » Sat Aug 31, 2013 8:52 am

HEY EVERYONE!

I know there are many topics about fruits and veggies but what I want to know is which ones do you cook and which ones to you give raw?

I do try to mix it up. Ex: Sometime I give raw carrots, broccoli, peppers and sometimes I boil them...

Do you give squash, Brussels sprouts and asparagus raw or cooked?

Any special on your menu today?

Gumby is having raspberries, cooked broccoli, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, peppers and cucumbers today :)

Go crazy !

I don't really cook f&v for the birds if I'm honest, they seem to prefer everything raw anyway. The only veg they get cooked is things I have cooked for myself, usually what I don't give them raw such as peas and potatoes.

if I had a choice I would prefer to go raw with everything. mya won't eat unless it's warm but I still try to sneak raw fruit/veggies into her warm chop or oatmeal.

really?!? Today was the first time I tried cooking her veggies. Gumby is not a fussy eater at all!! I just figured that raw asparagus and Brussels sprouts might not taste great!

I don't give them asparagus but I do give them Brussels sprouts (raw) and squash (green and yellow they get raw but the gourd-type ones I cook). The only things I don't give them are parsley, onions, avocados, beet greens, eggplant and mushrooms. Chard, spinach and collard greens are given VERY sparingly (maybe twice a year) and I never feed anything made out of milk or meat although I do give them a very small portion of the white of hard boiled eggs once or twice during breeding season.

My :irn: Seems to enjoy raw veggies and goes bonkers for fresh broccoli. My avian vet also did advise on fresh veggies but that cooked veggies were definitively better than no veggies.(only had my :irn: for a month so that first vet visit is still fresh in my mind)

Speaking of, Today my :irn: is a 1/2 year old :danicing:

I prefer most veggies uncooked for the kids but carrots are better nutritionally for humans and animals if they are lightly cooked/steamed. Steaming releases nutrients in the carrot by softening the woody exterior of the cells and also eradicates the enzymes found on carrots that cause allergies. :monk: I also find that my kiddos tend to waste less if some of types of veggies are cooked like cauliflower and broccoli and carrot.
