How much should my bird weigh?

Postby MilesBird » Fri Sep 06, 2013 12:03 pm

I have had my :irn: for over a month now and he has consistently weighed in at 103-104 grams. At just over six months old he should be fully grown(as big as he is going to get) from what i understand. I checked on line and the sites i looked at said he should weigh from 115-140 grams. My :irn: is a boy if that makes a difference and he seems happy and he plays lots. Do i have anything to worry about, is he just a smaller :irn: or will he be getting bigger?

ps. He weighed that much when i took him to the vet at 5 months old and the vet said that was fine then so i might be worried about nothing.

Looking at a chart to find out weights isn't all that useful to be honest since that is an average pulled from somewhere. But some individuals will always be bigger and some will be smaller without anything to worry about. Now there are two kinds of people really that can tell you weather this is the correct weight for your bird (and not through any kind of forum tbh) either someone familiar with the species in question, and I mean really familiar familiar enough with it to be able to feel weather or not the bird is skinny or on the heavy side. The other kind of person is an avian vet. However if you know you have a fully grown bird and the bird is the mass it should be the. Keeping track of weight is important, because this is usually the first place you will notice an anomality caused by illness or stress.

Online charts is basically only useful if you want to compare the size of birds where you have little to no possibility to meet them in person.

It also depends on the bird's 'shape' because muscle is heavier than fat so, sometimes, we feel the keel and think the bird is fine but, if we weigh it, we see that he is under the 'normal' weight. Does he fly a lot?

He is clipped atm but his favorite thing to do is have me fly him around the house (this involves me speed walking and sometimes running around the house while he flaps and pretends that he is flying) So while he doesnt fly i guess the correct responds is that he is very active
