Why aren't Chestnuts a preferred food?

It appears that out of all the nuts, Chestnuts appear to be the lowest in fat. Since they're a challenge to get out of their shells and do NOT pack a high fat punch I'm surprised that I've never heard them mentioned before.

They can eat them if they are thoroughly checked for mold and fungus as well as cooked but hardly anybody feeds them to parrots because they are expensive and parrots prefer nuts with more protein while chestnuts are mostly high in carbs.

My Grandpa had a Chestnut tree that he hated since he couldn't get rid of all the spikey burrs and nuts on the lawn. Maybe it would be best to find a similar "unwanted" tree.

Yeah paying the retail prices would be prohibitive. Are there any other "healthy" lowfat nuts out there?

Walnuts, almonds, pistachios and pecans are not bad. The last two also a bit pricey but they don't have to be fed in large quantities or all the time (I rotate them because I don't like to buy large quantities at once).
