Is my parrot's poop healthy?

Postby William » Sun Sep 22, 2013 6:33 pm

Help! Sometimes my quaker parrot has liquid poop. I suppose this is diarrhea. But sometimes he just has normal looking poop but it has quite a bit of liquid in it. He just pooped on my finger, here's a pic. Tell me what you think, thanks!

P.S, I'm trying to get an appointment for an avian vet to get his poop checked out. But I would like to know what you guys think is going on. His poop is not always liquidy like this. Only like every other day.

LOL - Well, the feces and the ureates look good, I can't tell about the urine because it's on your hand instead of a paper that would show the amount of 'stain' it made so we can calculate if it's too much, too little or just right.

As to diarrhea every other day, are you sure it's diarrhea? Because as birds eliminate everything together and through the same opening (cloaca), it's easy to confuse diarrhea with polyuria (when they pee too much) and they always show a degree of polyuria and loose poop first thing in the morning and after eating a lot of fruits... Diarrhea is when the green (if you feed seeds and grains) or brown (if you feed pellets) part of the poop doesn't hold the 'wormy' shape and is so liquidy that it gets mixed with the white (ureates) and transparent (urine) liquid. Loose is when the dark and the white parts are good but there is too much of the urine (it makes a BIG stain on the paper and it's often accompanied by polydipsia -when they drink too much and/or too often).

Thank you for the info! He hasn't had liquidy poop today so I think he is okay. And I think it was polyuria too not diarrhea
