Mites and worms prevention

Postby Lquan » Fri Oct 11, 2013 2:49 pm

3 Weeks after getting my Lily, I treated her with Vetafarm Avian Insect Liquidator and Worm Gel. I only have one bird, Lily. The instructions say to use Avian Insect Liquidator every 3 months. And use Worm Gel every 6 weeks. I read somewhere that Avian Insect Liquidator should be used twice, 2 weeks apart, if you don't have any other bird in your house or keep introducing new birds into your household.

Does bird get mites and ticks if there is no other bird in your household? Is 2 treatments, 2 weeks apart, enough to kill all mites and ticks for many years down the road?

And for worms, do anyone treat parrot with Worm Gel as often as the instruction says?

I hate putting any kind of medicine on Lily only when it meant to keep her healthy.

Thanks.

I don't see any need to treat healthy indoor birds for either of those things. If you have any concerns then get the bird checked for parasites prior to commencing any treatment.

I agree with Marie, you don't need to treat your parrot for parasites unless you've had a diagnosis from an avian vet. Usually mites are not a concern for indoor bird pets. If you're concerned about mites get your bird checked out first before giving treatment.

I agree 100% with both previous posters. Never use a parasiticide on a healthy parrot. It's, after all, a poison.
