Bird sleep

Postby cubazon » Thu Oct 17, 2013 7:22 pm

So Im adopting a jenday conure this weekend, and I have the cage all set up and everything is parrot-proofed, got some cool toys made, got some nice perches made and I think Im ready...

My only concern right now is this...
Everything I have been reading about cage placement says to put the cage near where I spend alot of my time, but I also read that birds need 10-12 hrs of sleep each night.

I myself am a night owl and I often stay up watching tv or looking at the internet until the wee hours of the morning, and I get up the next day accordingly- late morning

So the place where I spend most of my time and where I think the cage should go is the same place I watch tv and compute, my living room...

I know that a flock of birds and nature can be noisy things, but is my new adoptee going to be able to sleep thru the tv all night?

I do have a heavy sheet on hand that will darken the cage good, but it wont keep out the sound and besides that, Im hard of hearing and usually have the tv up fairly loud so I can hear it, not always but usually.
And I pretty much shut all the house lights off around 1130 every night with the occasional turn-on for bathroom or snacks.

I mean the best spot in my house, I think, is literally about 4ft in front of the tv and 5 ft to the side of it, and is also roughly the same distances to my favorite spot on the couch, and also gives a great view of the front door(12ft directly across the room) which is usually open with security screen closed, weather permitting.

Its either this spot here in the living room, or its gotta go in my bedroom which is only thru a doorway but not in sight and I only am really in there when Im sleeping.

Am I just being silly..... ??
I really dont want my bird to be in a back room, I want it out here with me...

So here is a pic of what Im talking about, please excuse the bit of clutter, its my dogs bed and I have been making alot of parrot toys the last few days, and I know I know, I need some window coverings.....
My spot on the couch is lower right-hand corner in the pic, the reclining end of my L-couch

And WOW... This pic makes my 55" tv look tiny... It might be time for something a little bigger...

So its inportant that your bird and you have lots of time together.Watch for drafts from the open door and be sure to cover your bird cage at roughly the same time of night.Try to keep tv volumes low...they will adjust.Give them as close to 12 hours sleep as possible.Be sure when the cage is covered as little light from the tv gets under the blanket. It has worked her with 25 of our birds so it seems to be successfull.best of luck.
