I have two 3 month old lovebirds. They were weaned when I got them, and on a mostly-seed diet. As soon as I brought them home, I introduced them to pellets and fresh food. They LOVE their Roudybush crumbles, and enjoy a variety of vegetables, along with brown rice, quinoa, and homemade birdie bread. (They won't eat fruit or egg on its own, but I hide it in the bread.)
I am paranoid about the amount of birdseed I give them, because I have read so much about the dangers of seed diets. I have also read that Lovebirds should have some seed. Everything I read online gives a ratio of what their diet should look like, but being told 10% this or 25% that is difficult to understand when applying it to a varied diet!
Roudybush claims their pellets should be the sole diet, with fresh food given as an occasional treat, but I think this is for larger parrots, as I have read in several places that lovebirds require fresh food and birdseed in-addition to pellets!?
Could I get a few opinions from current or former lovebird owners on the diet I feed them, and if this sounds healthy?
Here is what they eat now:
- I have Roudybush pellets available to them all the time, and they pick at it all day.
- Every evening I give them a small bowl of either veggies with rice or quinoa, homemade birdie bread, or Quiko Egg Food (Quiko is given to them every few days, not every night)
- Every few days I will also give them a teaspoon of mixed birdseed (no sunflower seeds) as their evening meal.
Does this sound like a healthy lovebird diet? Should they have more or less birdseed than this? Any advice would be appreciated!
A little more information:
Both birds appear and sound happy and energetic. They love to play, chew, climb, grind their beaks, chirp loudly, and snuggle. They have time outside of their cage to fly and hang out every day. They have access to 2 hours of full-spectrum light per day. They are covered for 12 hours every night.
Thanks for reading. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
