Sun Conure having seizures

Postby dmarie » Fri Nov 01, 2013 10:14 pm

Trying to stay calm & positive, but my heart is breaking. My beautiful boy (Sun Conure) Pookie has had 3 seizures in 2 wks. Pookie is around 15 yrs old, I adopted him when he was 2, & he is my sweetheart. He has never had any medical issues, & has always been healthy. He eats a seed diet with fresh fruit and vegetables daily, & fresh filtered water daily. He doesn't stay in a cage, I make him a new cardboard & wooden house every month, he loves his houses. A little over 2 wks ago I heard him scream then go to the floor with his wings spread out full. I picked him up and held him & after about 5 minutes he crawled up on my shoulder & was fine again. I had never seen him do this & knew something happened, since everything seemed fine I thought he must have just gotten startled. Then almost 10 days later it happened again. I immediately call the Avian Vet & took him in yesterday. She did a complete blood panel (didn't come back yet) she said he is a little distended & it could be his liver. Today is Friday & I will have to wait until Monday for the results. In the meantime Im searching for as much info as I can on liver disease in parrots. I see a lot of people mentioned a "aloe detox" & I would like to know if anyone here has any experience with liver disease & what the best things I can do to get my boy better. I cant even think about losing my boy, & am praying he'll get better. Thank you!

You will need a bile acids test to find out if the liver is working normally but, usually, seizures are not part of the symptoms for liver disease -let me rephrase that, they are but only in the very last stages when the liver is not working at all and the blood is full of toxins which I doubt it's the case here as you would have seen lots of other symptoms prior to convulsions. I would suspect low calcium (vit D3 deficiency) dehydration (much more common than people think) and metal poisoning before I would suspect liver when it comes to seizures... Has your vet done tests to eliminate these other possible causes?
