Senegal losing stomach feathers

Postby JaydeParrot » Tue Nov 26, 2013 4:46 pm

My 7 year old male Senegal, Hide, is 'very' slowly losing some feathers around his lower/middlish stomach, someone first pointed it out to me just less than a month ago, but it was such a small loss I figured maybe he was just molting, over preening or had had some slight accident.

However I've noticed that his stomach has gone from a barely noticable dot of missing feathers to a smallish sort of one inch bald patch on his stomach.

He's got a mate and he has plenty of out time so I don't think he's plucking.

I don't know if he's going to re-grow the feathers or if he's still losing them, my family has described him as looking quite a tatty bird as of late, his old wing feathers have looked loose, like they should have fallen out for about 6 weeks but they haven't.

He doesn't fly unless asked to and only then he'll move about half a metre, my other Senegal would usually shed old feathers when flying. Is his non-flying having an impact on his abillity to shed and re-grow feathers or could there be another reason?

I would take him to a vet.

I'm with Wayne 100%. I've had four sonnies and they have all been EXCELLENT fliers and with the exception of Zoey, which got upset when I went on vacations for two weeks (niece wedding back home) and 'worried' the spot where she hides her beaks when sleeping, their plumage is flawless. Please take him to an avian vet for a complete check-up and have him do a bile acids test because non-molting and ratty feathers are both signs of a problem metabolizing protein which could be caused by liver malfunction.
