parrot now hates red & orange colored pellets

Postby cbm » Tue Jan 07, 2014 2:32 pm

My rescued parrot (which I've had for 2+years) came to me eating Zupreme Fruitblend pellets and ate all the colors. In the past few months he's stopped eating all the red and orange colored pellets. I tried giving him the Zupreme nutblend and veggieblend and he won't eat those. He won't eat the Harrison's pellets (a uniform brown color). Have begun to feed him more nuts since I'm concerned he's not eating enough. Any suggestions?

Keep him on the pellets, even if he didn't eat them all, they're all the same regardless of color and are a heck of a lot better for him than nuts. Don't make up for the pellets he's not eating with nuts or before long he won't even eat pellets.

Pellets are not the healthiest option and the colored ones are the worst, anyway. Why don't you try cooking some whole grains (wheat, barley, oats, brown rice, teff, kamut, quinoa, etc -it doesn't have to be a mix of all of them but 3 or 4 is good) and mixing them with cooked veggies (the frozen ones are good) like corn, peas, diced carrots, chopped broccoli or cauliflower, green beans, sweet potato, squash (like butternut, pumpkin, winter, etc), beets, artichoke hearts, etc. I know it sounds like a big hassle but once you get into it, it's not because you can make a big batch once a month and put daily portions in baggies and freeze them, besides, it's a MUCH healthier diet than pellets and they all love it.

Thanks. I'll reduce the nuts, continuing putting pellets in the cage, and mix up some grains/veggies, etc.
