Flight Feathers Gone

Postby MissLady9902 » Wed Feb 10, 2010 9:19 pm

I came home this morning and did the morning ritual of cleaning out water and hugging each bird before I go to bed.
I noticed a flight feather on the bottom of Noodles cage which led to a closer investigation only to discover that all of her fligh feather (that she just grew in)
were on the bottom of her house! So I took her out and looked and she had a bloody spot on her wing. I rinsed it off and pulled a broken feather so it wouldn't bleed again.
None of the flight feathers were broken so she must have pulled them out. She's never done anything like that before and it really concerns me.
She's eating normally, same weight, active, playful and bathed regularly. Nothing new has been introduced into the home so I don't know what the trigger might be.
I'm really worried about her!
I'd take her to the vet but there's nothing specific other than her pulling out all her flight feathers last night.
Any ideas? Anyhting like this happen to anyone else? Is this the first sign of a plucker?

OK first off, are these newly grown in feathers or old feathers? Are they broken or is the quill intact? Is this on both wings or one? About how many feathers are you talking about?

Six flight feathers from both wings quills intact. All were pulled sometime last night.
I couldn't find any broken feathers on the floor so I assume the blood was from where she pulld them out.

Are these new or old? You sure it's not some weird molt thing? Perhaps a night fright?

These are all the new ones she just grew in after her first molt.
It could have been a night fright but to lose 6 new flight feathers that were not broken seems concerning to me.
I'm definitly calling my vet tomorrow morning to ask her about it.
She had to have pulled them out but why? And only the flight ones?
No other feathers were at the bottom of her cage or nearby the cage.
Have you ever heard of something like this??

That is just so bizarre. Be sure to share with us what happened if you find out. Sorry I can't help you. No idea what that could be.

Wow, that's strange. Hopefully there isn't a serious reason for it. Please let us know what your vet says!
