I need help with my quaker

Postby Tony2010laurie » Sun Jan 26, 2014 9:56 am

Hi there,
I just have a question for the bird families out there, my quaker kiwi refuses to take a bath any where but his water bowl (he can only fit his bottem in the bowl), I have tried every thing to get him to take a full bath but still refuses to be sprayed, showered, misted, dripped, dunked, or even moistened if its not in his water bowl. I think he is about 2 and dislikes everyone in my family but me he eats regular fruits and veggies, he has regular nail clipping and wing trimming, he is a good bird just needs alot of patients and understanding my question is how do i get him to bath his entire body?

LOL - Simple! Give him a bigger bowl so he can dip his entire body in it (I use stainless steel cake and roasting pans for the bigger birds and medium size dog bowls for the little ones). And please, reconsider the wing clipping, it's terribly unhealthy for them both physically and emotionally.

If your concerned over your >>> :monk: getting sick from drinking where he's put his birdy behind, maybe you can switch him over to water bottles like Michael's done in the video below.

Then you can provide water in the bowl at certain times for a bath!

Agreed, bottles are the way to go to avoid bacteria in the water! Just remember to clean them daily.

His cage and out and he is very frightened of it he like to be very high up in his cage and almost never see him at the bottem. and to Dbeguy thank you so much i will certainly get a water bottle in there as soon as possible....any other hints or tips would be great...thank you so much

Fully agree with this...

Chance is the same way. I take her in the shower with me, but she'll only stand it for about two seconds and she's DONE.

She'll sometimes bathe in her water bowl, but this doesn't necessarily suffice, so this is what I do: I offer her a larger bowl with lukewarm water in which she bathes herself in. Works like a charm. :D

If that doesn't work (like you've said) I like the other suggestions, 'certainly worth a try.

I hate water bottles for birds. They are the most unnatural thing ever for a bird to drink from -any animal, actually. I used to use one for my mouse (mostly because everybody said it was 'the' thing to use for mice and such) and although I did not like the fact that the little tube can never be actually cleaned, I still tried it. Now, I always touched the bottom ball thingie to make sure the water was coming out and one day, it didn't even though I pushed it several times - that was the end of the bottle for my mouse, she now drinks out of a stainless steel shallow little plate. Parrots are not programmed to drink many times a day and, after observing mine, I realized that they mostly drink big gulps of water when I put it fresh for them in the morning and that's about it for the day. Well, there is no way a bird can do that with a bottle and just thinking that they might go to the bottle and find the little ball doesn't work would worry me something terrible (a member of another forum just had a budgie die from dehydration even though he had water in the cage) Bottles are easier for the owner but I doubt that, given a choice, a bird would opt to drink from a bottle instead of a bowl and my birds preferences always come before my convenience so no bottles for mine.

I use a water bottle for my guinea pig. Even though the bottle is blue in color, algea grows inside. It is time consuming to clean. And I don't know how to clean inside the stainless steel tube with the ball bearing at the end! Granted that food particles don't get inside, but the algea, sheez!

I use a water silo for my GCC. Very easy to disassemble and clean. I can clean every single part. My GCC still manage to get food particles in the small trough once in a while, but I change the water everyday anyway. The silo install from the outside of the cage.

Yes, I used to use those with my canaries and finches, they are quite practical.
