How to wash off dirt from your bird?

Postby Scotty » Fri Jan 31, 2014 8:58 pm

Hi Everyone!

Noelani my Too that I was given as some may know, the original owners I don't think ever gave her a bath.

Not that when you first look at her you really notice dirt, but being a Too and white if you look closely you can see she's a bit dirty, especially when you get her wet, then you can see stains of dirt in the feathers.

Is it safe to use some type of soap and wash the bird to clean off the feathers?

Thanks...

I don't really know but I see on TV occasional commercials where they use Dawn dish detergent to wash the oil from spills off all kinds of birds and other animals. At this point in time I don't know how much of that is true but there probably is something that you could use. Whether it is to be recommended or not....

Well I decided to give her a wash and I have a really nice glycerin soap, not the see through kind either, it's really mild, all natural, and it seemed to work, she looks better.

My personal opinion: Don't use Dawn! Here's an example of one of their products with toxic chemicals.

Dawn is also owned by Procter and Gamble, a company that is KNOWN for testing on animals.

I make all natural, organic and sustainable soap with organic food grade ingredients (I eat my own organic coconut oil which also I make soap with, lol) and I don't use my own soap when bathing my parrot, lol. You "could" put organic aloe vera juice mixed with water in a bottle and spray your bird. Or, take your bird into the shower and see if she wants to bathe with you. If that fails, offer a water bowl to bathe in, or again, use a spray bottle.

I once rescued a pigeon that was all white with a black tail. He was filthy with a wounded wing and couldn't fly. Over time, as I nursed him back to health, he molted and his plumage was bright white. He only bathed in water, once.

Here is a photo of him, healthier:

Pure warmish water should do the trick, would have thought you'd need soap.

Noelani will take a shower with me in it, so it's not a problem washing her...

Thanks guys...
