Burritos?

Postby GreenWing » Sat Feb 01, 2014 5:12 pm

So, I enjoy "Amy's" brand of organic vegetarian burritos. Looking at the ingredients, it has a lot of good stuff. Is it okay to give Chance a taste of these organic burritos? She always wants some of what I'm eating, and I am happy to share if it's okay for her. Of course, there's no no-nos as far as I can see (i.e., avocado).

Greenwing, I think you know enough about parrot care to trust your own judgment on the product your asking about but if there any any ingredients your not 100% sure of then add them to your thread as that might help us help you more. I know I'm not familar with the food your asking about so I'm sure others will be the same.

chance is one lucky bird to have you and dont you forget it :)

I second what Marie says! :)

I can only think of beans as a possible toxin, but I don't remember what types of beans are in those. Just search the beans and see if they are safe. I love Amy's anything! :)

Aw, thanks Marie... you're such a gem :) And thanks KimberlyAnn, too... I too love Amy's anything! lol :)

I looked at the ingredients and they seem fine? Not all of the "Amy's" brand of organic burritos have refried beans... I think only one of them does, and I was more concerned about the refried beans due to the fat. Some of the others just have cooked pinto and black beans and corn... they have some cheese. It seems fine to me, but maybe with the salt content, keep it in moderation.

She's eating a mix of organic celery, carrots, apples, and Dave's Killer Bread toast for dinner tonight, lol

I checked the low sodium bean and rice burritos ingredients and my only concern would be the onions (I don't know if they can eat them or not but I don't feed them to any of my animals) and salt.

To me, human food is human food and they never get any of it. They never ever get to eat from our plates, because that would reinforce something I dont want encouraged.

They get veggies, fruit, pellets, birdie bread and seeds, and that is enough - they dont need to have the same things I cook for me and my wife.

If I want them to share a meal with me, I eat some of the veggies and fruit they get, after all they get only the best organic fruit and veggies so thats no biggie. Great way to get them to eat stuff as well.

I can understand that you want Chance to try something from what you are eating, but it's not parrot food and I really dont see the point! If you want the flock behaviour thing with sharing food, then slice and dice some nice veggies! I'm sure chance will be just as happy with that!

Oh, I don't know but it appears to me that except for just a few items that there is no real difference between what is human and/ or parrot food. For the most part the distinction between the two is only a matter of our own perception and/or delusions. Not one of us that I am aware of is feeding these birds what their natural diet, or even a reasonable facsimile of it. This is partly because no one even know what their natural diet is.
I do agree that we should refrain from sharing anything with them that is harmful to them and if we are in doubt find out before it is offered to them.

My distinction is that something I cook for me and my wife, is something they dont get. I dont see the point in "just this once they will get to try this", when I can offer them much better food that I prepare especially for them.

Yes, all the food they get is human grade, and as I said, I sometimes eat a bit of their veggies or fruit ;). Everything is the best quality organic food I can get.

But why would I risk giving them something that is prepared for humans? Like a burrito? Or pasta sauce (I read somewhere of people feeding that to parrots)?

To me, risking something just because we want to project our own stuff onto them, isnt in the least soemthing I want to do.

Chance never eats off my plate, just thowing that out there. :D If I share food with her, it's separated and placed in her dish. I know better than that lol

There are "human foods" perfectly fine for parrots and are actually excellent for them: Quinoa, quinoa pasta, whole grain wheat, etc. Cooked beans (except maybe KIDNEY BEANS) are stated to be very healthy for parrots by Avian vets.

Why is okay to give them pellets but not natural foods, like organic beans and rice that I eat? I don't understand this logic.

Parrots need a varied diet. Cooked beans and legumes are very healthy. The burritos are organic with organic food, such as corn and beans, and I was just wondering if a TINY bit would be healthy for her. To me, it seems like a little would be okay. Like Pajarita mentioned, the only part that concerns me is the onion but more so the salt content.

If you read my last post you will find that I agree with you in the fact that we should not share with them anything which we know is harmful to them or anything we are unsure of.

I suspect that the act of sharing what we eat with them is a mutual bonding activity and not simply the projecting ourselves upon them. I think if one thinks of it in those terms that the basis for it would be one of our being envious of our notion of what it is like to be one of them.

The act of sharing food with them also has roots in the fact that it is a normal part of their flock behavior, a normal part of family groups throughout the animal kingdom in nature, as well as a normal part of human social behavior. From this one could conclude that going against this behavior would be to deny our own natural state of being, unless one considers oneself to be above or better than those ( animal or human ) in our social/family groups.

just my take on this topic
