Running out of food Ideas, PICKY EATER

Postby Rhibelle13 » Wed Feb 05, 2014 5:04 am

My 5 yr old eclectus is very food picky! She was a rescue who didn't get the proper diet she deserves. When i first picked her up the "owners were giving her wild bird seed similar to an outside bird feeder mix. NO fruits and veggies!
Needles to say i am a vegetarian and share some fruits/veggies with her, She will not eat anything other than apples, grapes and carrots. OVER THE PAST 6 MONTHS I HAVE TRIED SO MANY OTHER THINGS, but no luck.
I now have her eating the correct seed & nut mix. But my problem is i have tried ALL brands ie, Zupreem, Nutriberry, Roudybush regular pellets and also fruit blends (the ones that look like trix cereal) she WILL NOT touch any of them, i have tried only giving her pellets and she wont eat? Im at a loss, she actually will dig through her bowl and throw out all the pellets on the floor! I know seeds and fruit wont give her proper vitamins. Any suggestions or Brands you guys know of for picky eaters?

P.S she will eat some oatmeal off my spoon every now and then too.

Thanks in advance :?

Well, my dear, for one thing, you should not feed an ekkie any oil seeds. They can eat a small portion of cooked whole grains and they can have a couple of nuts but that's about it. You should never, ever just put seed in an ekkie's feeding bowl and leave it there. 6 months is not that long, it has taken me years to get a bird to try something new so just keep on trying. Get yourself some wheat kernels, barley, oat groats, brown rice, etc, cook them until they are al dente and add cooked and finely diced or chopped veggies like corn, sweet peas, carrots, sweet potatoes -these you can leave in larger chunks- beets, broccoli, etc. Serve it at room temperature or barely lukewarm early in the am when the sun is rising (don't turn on the artificial lights, allow the bird to have a full exposure to dawn, it will help with her appetite). Try mango, papaya, blackberries, pears, oranges (my ekkies loved oranges), etc and eat them with her early in the morning. If you feed her at the right times (dawn and dusk) and eat her food sitting next to her, she will eat, too. It might take a while but it will happen.

Also, if I were you, I would take that bird to an avian vet and have a bile acids test done on her because 5 years of seeds for an ekkie is real bad on the liver.

Keep trying. It took Corsair almost a year of being served broccoli every day before she started eating it, instead of just throwing it on the floor. And she's been getting veggies since she was weaned.

I agree with the others. Ekkies should NOT be given pellets, except in VERY tiny amounts.

See this list for Ekkie foods.

Keep trying, as Harpmaker says. Eat the organic fruit and veggies in front of her while saying, "Mmmmmm!" (It works with my Grey, lol). Introduce unsalted popcorn, or other fruits that Pajarita/the list mentions.

No commercial popcorn unless it's the one with no 'butter' -the one that has it tests at 27 grams of fat per serving.
