Babies Screened for PBFD, Polyomavirus Is This Good?

Postby Scotty » Sat Feb 15, 2014 3:29 pm

I was looking at some birds from breeders and one mentions that they screen them for PBFD and Polyomavirus, is this like something someone should look for in every breeder they buy a bird from? But then I guess if not, the owner could just take the bird later to the vet, but then again, you might have an unexpected surprise on your hands?

I never thought in buying my next bird what I should expect being done or checked at the breeder, hmm...

She wants you to rescue a bird in need instead of look for a breeder. :)

Correct. It's the same as buying a puppy from a petstore or breeder instead of adopting one from a rescue. When there is an overpopulation of any given species used as a pet, a serious consideration to rescuing should be given. Aside from the moral issue which might or might not matter to different people, you have the health (an adult bird has already proven not been infected at birth), the mellowing (you don't have to go through puberty which, sometimes, makes the bird turn against you) and, best of all, what you see is pretty much what you get whereas, with a baby, it's a lottery.
