What Are Good Air Tight Food Containers?

Postby Scotty » Fri Feb 21, 2014 4:59 pm

I was looking at these Vittles containers and thinking of getting the Vittles Vault Junior;

A bird shop I buy my pellets from uses these and swears by them, anyone have any experience with them, or know anything better?

Thanks :)

Glass jars is what I use. Like the canning jars for small stuff like herbs. I bought a bigger jar for pellets when I was feeding pellets. They have some glass containers for juice with plastic tops too.

I just don't trust plastic now days. I did have her pellets in plastic containers before...BPA free. The pellets started smelling like plastic...stuff like flour too for my baking. The taste is awful after awhile. So I'm done with plastic unless it's going to be in it for only a few days.

But with the canning jars, I get a very good seal every time and find I have to slightly pry the tops off. It works well! They have huge canning jars for pickles that would work well. Gallon size with wide mouth tops to fit a scoop in. Plus, they are very easy to sterilize with boiling water. Glass does have small holes in it, but plastic seems to leach things out and hold things in. You heat it up to sterilize and it gets worse over the months and years so I personally don't keep containers over about two years. Ok partly because I do forget stuff at work. Haha.

But then again I want to add that I am a woman and so I have to be more watchful with plastic and cancer issues then men do. It runs in my family so...but I think for pets it's also important. It there is a health risk for humans to use plastic containers, it might be a risk for animals to. If you need to use plastic because you see a risk with children in the home, maybe look for BPA free products.

Plastic good point, I didn't really consider it for something dry like this if it posed a problem, I've always looked at plastic to stay away from storing drinking water in...

Glass I will have to look at using something like this instead...

But now the place I buy from stores their bulk food in these containers, now I have to consider if buying from them is not a good idea, but they tell me they go through their bulk food fast, in a few days, so then hopefully that is always the case, then the food isn't in these containers long, so there should be no harm...

My parrots fresh food is frozen and the seeds are kept in metal containers (I buy in bulk four different types of seed mixes plus the nuts)

YES I SO AGREE. And I love the look of glass jars... that apothecary look to them. :) I agree, glass is the way to go.

I also have frozen food...ice cube food shaped food. Lol I do keep them in a plastic bag, but it goes very quick and I just do not have room in my freezer for a jar.

I also like the look of jars! I have Emmi's jars on a shelf and it really does look like decoration...all 30 of them lol Canning jars are so cheap and handy.

I think if you stick with food grade plastic you are fine. I use those plastic ice cream containers with snap on lids. I havent noticed any plastic smells coming off.

Be careful with reusing plastic containers you buy food in. Check the bottom and look for the number. Numbers 2, 4, and 5 are safer to reuse. Numbers 1 and 3 are one time use only. Which means that once heated even a bit in warm soapy water, chemicals are leaching out.
