Oh, yes, it takes a loooooong time to 'convince' parrots that something new is 'good', you just have to keep on trying every day - even if it means throwing money down the toilet.

My vet recommends in additional to pellets to give them at least one food that is high in vitamin A every day. He recommended Roudybush or Harrisons pellets for my Grey, but mentioned he has other brands he recommends for other parrot species. (Dr. Nemetz has actually done published studies on parrot diets, so it is not just anecdotal comments).

Here is his list of foods to add every day that are high in vitamin A:

He also says to be patient when giving new foods to parrots as they are naturally cautious creatures and don't often want to eat new things. Often you have to give them the opportunity to try it many times (5 to 7) before they may eat it. One thing he recommends is have the parrot watch you eat some as it might let your parrot know that you feel it is safe and might be more willing to give it a try.

5 to 7 times? He must be a magician! -LOL- It has taken me up to 5 years (YEARS not times), to get a seed junkie parrot to eat a semi-varied diet. And this is with me not only eating with them (which is very good advice) but also all the other parrots eating, too! They are VERY distrustful when it comes to food!

But, no, no processed 'veggie blend' will provide the same nutrition as fresh produce. None!

I put leafy greens in hanging foraging toys, so they look like a fun toy to pull apart to begin with, and I also rub a bit of red palm fruit oil on the leaves. It makes the leaves more delicious to my birds + it's a vitamin A supplement

It doesn't matter what combination of pellets you use, they still need the produce because all pellets are 'dead' food. The trick is when and how so you need to feed them the good food early in the morning (about one hour after sunrise so they are good and hungry) and there should be no pellets or seeds in the cage (otherwise, they will go for them every time as they are hard-wired to gorge on protein). Of course, this implies that the food with the produce has also some cooked whole grains mixed in UNLESS we are talking about an ekkie which should eat just veggies and fruits all day long and get just a bit of protein in the evening.

I'm going to make him a bird mash, take out his food bowl at night, and in the morning, provide him the mash to eat.

Great! But, take into consideration that it will take time.
