How often do I feed my quaker parrots?

Postby Desire Mercy » Wed Mar 19, 2014 5:59 pm

How often should I have food available for my quaker parrots? I've been trying various google searches, but can't seem to find anything.

I'm mainly feeding them a homemade chop consisting of several different grains, veggies, legumes, and seasonings.

I also purchased a small tub of Lafeber's Pellet-Berries.

Should I always provide food? Or should I only feed them twice a day?

For the Pellet foods, Provide them not stop to ensure they won't starve, And for Grains, Fruits, Veggies, Etc, Leave them through the day, replace foods Every 2-4 hours to ensure there's no bacteria, and take them out in the night hours, Dry foods like rice don't need to be replaced, but should be taken out before bed, and changed every other day to prevent it becoming stale, replace as many times as you feel the need to, better safe than sorry!

And for water, Replace 1-3 times a day, and do a deep scrub if your birdie decides to poop into it!

*I would recommend you try samples of different bird pellets, like Roudybush and Harrison's and see if your two little Quakers like them! c: Always good to have a variety!*

Good luck with your two new Feathered Friends, and best luck to you!

Depends on the age. If less than one year old, provide food all day long for a growing body. If an adult over a year, twice a day works well.

The home-made chop I make for them I vary the ingredients in it every week/week and a half. We had some "parakeet" stuff the breeder gave us, but decided to try out the Lafeber's "pellet-berries" which are actually finely chopped fruit, seeds, and vitamins. Honestly, it smells so good I'm tempted to try some myself.

I did change the water out several times a day, but then switched to a gravity-trough that leaves the water very protected. I check it throughout the day, but it'd take an exceptional amount of effort for them to actually poop in it.

The Parrot berries are quite nice, i have yet to try them out for Sammy, And i'm sure they may taste good! *Sammy's food smells like cheese...not very pleasant cheese o.o*

The gravity-trough is actually a good idea, with that you wont need to change the water often! *Unlike some parrots.. :amazon: *

Im sure the homemade Chop will provided your two :quaker: with everything they need, i wish you luck with them!

I feed mine gloop (it's like chop only the veggies are cooked instead of raw) accompanied with a raw fruit, a veggie and a leafy green (a different one every day, repeating every 7, 10 or 14 days, depending on the item's nutrition, price and availability but there are things they get very occasionally -like raw sugar cane, for example) and leave it there all day (no bad bacteria will reproduce so fast and so much in just a few hours, the stuff will become ripe and maybe soft but it will not rot) and a small, measured amount of seeds (they get ABBA 1600C and ABBA 1300 mixed in equal parts with whatever nut I am serving that evening) for dinner. For a quaker, I use a heaping tablespoon of the seed mix plus the nut.
