Beak strength

Postby Trueeast » Mon Mar 31, 2014 1:07 pm

I was just curious if there are certain age points where they can eat harder foods. I have a 13 week old baby timneh and she can't crack pine nuts and the dried corn. I'm not super concerned about this because she's eating her pellets and fresh foods fine just more me being curious.

I have a 14 yr. old CAG which will not bother with either whole kernel dried corn or pine nuts, but will eat cracked corn and pine nuts that I have cracked open for her.

The Parrot Wizard has instructions on getting his birds to shell their own nuts, at http://trainedparrot.com/index.php?bid=47&article=How+to+Teach+Parrot+to+Break+Open+Large+Nuts. He has his Senegal, Kili, :senegal: cracking almonds.

She is still a baby and doesn't have that much strength in her beak so she needs more soft foods than nuts right now but, give her time and she'll grow into them.

Kiki, my Senegal love her almonds and steals them from the other birds, shells them and feasts on them.
