Intestinal problem, watery poop

Postby liz8200 » Fri Apr 25, 2014 3:26 am

My Blue crested Conjure has had watery stools for 2 months. He seems fine except he sleeps more. I had a vet come by and check him out and they said he had an intestinal infection, They gave him a shot and left me some drops to give him. The drops taste really bad and I have tried everything to give him the drops. He has gotten some of the medicine. But he still has wet stools.
I know I cant let this go on for long. I don't know what to do.
Does anyone know of a remedy for this? Or is there an antibiotic that doesn't taste so bad?

You need to take your bird to an avian vet asap, he needs tests not just an exam to determine the problem. I'm assuming this hasn't been done based on the fact you "had the vet stop by" As for the meds if your bird isn't trained to taking meds your just going to have to make him have them using the correct restraint methods, but first giving any old meds just wont do, you need to find the cause to enable the correct treatment.

please keep us updated. Good luck.

Hmmmm, I don't know of any bird that could have a bacterial infection and diarrhea for two months and survived it so, if I were you, I would take that bird to an avian vet as soon as possible.

All antibiotics used on birds taste bad. All of them without exception. The antibiotic of choice for birds is usually Baytril BUT in your bird's case, I would use metronidazole because it's not only more specific to intestinal infections, it also has a good anti-inflammatory effect on the digestive tract. Metronidazole comes in liquid form and it's just a matter of toweling the bird twice a day (every 12 hours) and giving him the dosage indicated with a small syringe in his beak. He won't like it but it will save his life so you have no choice but to do it. Now, normally, a vet would prescribe two weeks of antibiotic, I suggest you ask for three and do one week of treatment, one day of probiotics, week two of treatment, one day of probiotics, week three of treatment and an entire week of probiotics. I would also put him on organic apple cider vinegar, unfiltered and unpasteurized (the one that has 'the mother') adding a few drops of it every day to his water.

Please don't delay. It's a miracle that bird is still alive after two months of diarrhea...

I have a question. What are you feeding your bird? Is it getting a large volume of fruits?

I agree with wolf, if I feed my birds nothing but fruit, they give out watery poop, they need something solid like sunflower seeds to be able to give out more solid poop.

I posted to this blog a 6 months ago. I am just getting back and reading messages.,I lost the password.
I am getting more worried. Since I posted about my Conjure having watery poop I have taken him to a Vet that I trust 4 times. The Vet has done every test he can do but one. So far nothing has come back positive as the reason for his watery poop.

The last thing he gave me to try was fungus meds. He said if that doesn't work he can do one more test before a specialist.

He want's to put a probe in Pokeys anus and check for something like polyps. I'm not happy about that but if there is a cure for that I want him to do that.

After that if he cant's cure this he will talk to a specialist. Pokey seems ok but he's not eating as much and sleeping more.

Does anyone have an idea or anything? Thanks Liz

I understand that you lost your password and that sucks for certain. We can't do tests on your bird and we don't have any information to go on, The little bit that we have asked for you have not provided. I don't know why, but here is the deal. We would like very much to help your bird, that is why we are here. You are our only source of information concerning your bird, you are sort of like our eyes and ears into your bird's world and without your help, there is nothing that we can do to help.
Ok, enough on that! You said that your vet has done tests, what tests has he done? What do you feed your bird, exactly? What about water, like where does it come from? Is it city water? Well water? Spring water? Bottled water? Is the water hard or soft water? Can you give us city and state for where you are located?

I keep mini jelly beans on hand. Rambo will do most anything for one.

I had a little dog with cushings deseas . The liquid meds were awful. I had a dose of maple syrup ready and she took the meds to get the syrup.

Liz, please be careful about the use of jelly beans with respect to your birds as it is a dangerous compound to give them. Please read: http://www.africangreys.com/articles/ot ... dsugar.htm
and reconsider this practice and use a piece of fruit instead.

Yep, I agree with Wolf and, besides, the worst thing you can give for an intestinal disorder is sugar.

OP, please tell us what tests were done (and, results, if at all possible) and what the normal diet is (not what you give the bird but what he actually eats) so we can give you an informed opinion. Have you tried probiotics and ACV? Was a bile acid test done?
