Normal Vocalization?

Postby luvsmallfurries » Thu May 22, 2014 6:42 pm

I'm not sure if this is the best place for this question...mods, feel free to move this to wherever you think it might get the best answers!

My Sennie has for years made a sort of low volume rattle/buzz sound by clacking or vibrating his beak from side to side. He seems to be very relaxed and content when he does it - and he's done this for years. This is different from the full on beak clack I see when he's wanting something. And it's also different from the more vocal, almost cat like, "purr" that I hear when he's chatting with me and a little more excited.

Is this a normal Senegal vocalization? I'd hate to think he's been in low grade pain all these years and I've been ignoring it!

I did get some video, you will have to turn up your volume! Sorry about the angle - I had to do this rather surreptitiously over my shoulder, otherwise he perks up and stops.

My Senegal makes a very low barely audible grinding sound when she is happy and content. I wasn't able to hear anything on your video, but will try again when I get my ear phones back. Could that be the sound you are hearing?

Wolf's got it. My CAG makes that sounds quite often as she drifts off to sleep. Beak grinding is quite normal, and as Wolf said, the sign of a happy bird. :)

I also cannot hear anything from the video but it does sound as if you are describing beak grinding, which is a way of showing contentment in parrots.

Thanks you three. You have to turn the volume WAY up...I was 4 feet away on a couch recording on my phone!

I figured it was a happy sound...just curious just in case!

I picked a better angle tonight so I could watch instead of just hear this. Beak grinding is a very good description. The lower beak drops a bit, rattles back and forth rapidly for a second - pause, rinse and repeat! Tonight it's two grinds then a second of a low burbling sound...two more grinds then another low burbling sound. I'd forgotten how relaxing that is!
