temp of water

Postby Tman007 » Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:37 am

First off I will be giving my parrot bottle water. The water here in Vegas is like drinking out of a swimming pool. They have so many additives in it. But here's the thing, why do people say to give your parrot room temp water. Wouldn't your parrot like some nice cold water. or is it to hard on their system? Just would like to know.
Thanks

Bottled water is fine but make sure that it is not distilled water. Digestion in a bird starts in the crop and if this is cooled off too much then the contents could sour instead of digesting properly.

It depends on the bird's age. Little ones do better with warm food and room temperature water but adults LOVE cold water. Some of them even love to bathe in water with ice cubes in it.

I knew about the young birds but, slap me silly, I didn't know about the adults and cold water especially ice in bath water.

If your birds bathe in a bowl, Wolf, try putting a couple of ice cubes in it on a hot summer day and you'll see. One of my cockatoos actually tries to eat them (he looks as if he was bobbing for apples -LOL)

Another advantage of cold water (for adult parrots) is that it will take longer to get hot and warmer water is more likely to spread bacteria. In raging summer, I put ice in my bird's bottles and they are happy to have something to cool off with and it keeps stuff from growing in the water.
