You can't pass the cold or most of the flu viruses to them (too big) but you can pass other respiratory infections - as well as infect them with salmonella, e.coli, etc if you are not careful washing their produce and your hands thoroughly before you touch them or their food. Personally and even though I know it can't happen, I am always very careful when I am sick, I wash my hands thoroughly before I do anything with them and I never breathe, cough or sneeze on them, or kiss them. My motto has always been 'Better safe than sorry and, when in doubt, don't do it" and it has served me well all the years I've kept birds.
