Good brands of food?

Postby LittleMissPetPerson » Wed Jun 25, 2014 7:57 pm

Hey all! Does anyone know of any good quality food brand that are sold in Canada? Ok I think I've got this right you want to give them about 25% seeds and 75% pellets in their dish as well as a variety of fruits and veggies. If I'm wrong please correct me.

If you feed them enough whole grains and veggies and fruit their is no need to feed them pellets at all. Pellets were created for the purpose of replacing these foods and are at best a very poor substitute, in my opinion, and at this time I don't use them at all.

I am also against feeding pellets. Some species do worse on them than others, like amazons and little ones which all do much better on a good, low protein seed mix (only for dinner, mind you) than any pellet.

But, if I had to recommend one brand, it would be TOPs and no other.

I do use pellets, but only a few at dinner time. Most of Corsair's food is fruits and veggies with pieces of nuts, popcorn, and dried fruits(like a raisin) for treats. Maybe as I learn more, we'll back off on the pellets, but she doesn't always eat the pellets anyway, especially when she gets brown rice or plain oatmeal at breakfast. She does like to crush the pellets to powder and put them back in the bowl, though, even if she doesn't eat them. Currently I'm feeding her a mix of Roudybush and TOPS.

All the avian vets push pellets, but at least they also recommend stopping the all seed diet, and supplementing with fruits and veggies now.

One AV told me about an elderly (90+) lady on a vegetarian diet who fed her African Grey what she ate. The AV guessed the bird was about 10 years old from its appearance, but was told it was 75. Did they even HAVE pellets back then?

Only if you can be sure to provide the correct nutrion without pellets. I dont want to start a pellets vs fresh food debate, I believe both are good options and have their uses :)!

Personally, I give them pellets once a day, and a very varied freshfood diet (three different veggies and fruit everyday of the week) once a day. This way I feel I am doing the best by them and offering them the best from two worlds.

I've recently switched over to Totally Organics Pellets (TOPS) as well and am very impressed with them so far. Better still is that they contain no nuts (which is great since both me and my wife are allergic to nuts).
