do I need feed my senegal pellets

Postby Di Wu » Fri Jun 27, 2014 8:00 am

Hello
I am new to this forum. I have a 5 month old senegal parrot since 3 weeks ago. He eat everything I eat, so he eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. He eat seed mix as well. The problem is that I don't know how much seeds I should give to him, I guess I give him too much, and he pick up mainly the sunflower seeds. I try to feed him pellets, and this is the only food he doesn't like even I eat the pellet myself in front of him.
So do I really need to convince him eat pellets? and how much seed mix I should give to him so he will eat not only sunflower seeds if he can keep his current seed mix, vegetable and fruit diet?
Thanks
Di Wu

You don't need to feed your parrot pellets but he does need to eat a good diet. Human food is not a good diet for parrots because they can't eat fried food, salt, meat, additives, preservatives, artificial colors and flavorings, etc. Of course, if you eat a super healthy vegetarian diet and don't use any salt or anything else in your meals, it's OK. I feed mine cooked whole grains mixed with cooked vegetables, raw produce (fruit, vegetable, leafy green) for breakfast and two level tablespoons of a good seed mix plus one medium size or half a large size nut to mine. I combine two different seed mixes for cockatiels for mine, one has some striped sunflowers and the other one is safflower based.

Thanks, Pajarita
When I said he eat what I eat, I mean that I can easily teach him to eat a new food by eating the same food in front of him. I feed him only raw fruit such as apple, banana and vegetable such as broccoli, carrot, green peas.... .I do not feed him normal human food.

S'okay, this is the DL:

Parrots need a diet consisting of Vitamin A fruits and veggies, see here.

Then of course there is the list for other food for parrots, seen here.

Personally, I think pellets, or rather a mix, like TOPS (the best) or Volkman's Avian Science Diet for Hookbill parrots, is a good supplement.

Basically, I do this: I feed my parrot twice a day, with some healthy snacks in between (like snap peas from my garden or a bit of carrot). One meal is all fresh garden veggies/fruits and grains/carbs, like cooked quinoa or Birdie bread. Another meal is a mix of Volkman's Avian Science Diet, some oats, and dried fruit, like raisins -- organic, of course.

Parrots DO need "some" seed, like safflower, in their diet.

I don't really train with treats, but praise and the clicker.
