Any reasons for twitching wings?

Postby JaydeParrot » Thu Jul 03, 2014 1:48 pm

My Sennie, Hide keeps occassionally twitching his wings when they're closed, he self-clipped his feathers last year, the self-clipped (chewed feathers) are pointy and can often be felt if you stroke his wings when they're closed. He's also having alot of new feathers pushing out and replacing his old chewed wing feathers so I wonder if he's just itchy?

Anyone have any idea on wing twitching?

Any particular time or activity you are doing when you notice it?

My grey twitches his wings-- I've always thought of it as "flicking" or "snapping" them. He just shudders each one only once, and then lays it back down. Then, a moment later he'll do it again. Sometimes he'll do that several times in the span of a couple of minutes. He does it usually when he's very calm and relaxed, and perhaps a bit tired-- like when he's sitting on his perch in the living room with me when the lights are dim and we're on our 3rd episode of a good show, so he's been there a while. I've always taken it as a sign of contentedness.

Don't know if this is what you're describing though. My grey is not clipped and has no feather issues, so if yours is unhappy when twitching his wings, it might be totally about something else.

Could it be a flutter. They do that when begging for something. That is how they beg their parents.

No, I don't think it's fluttering because this is a constant movement accompanied by a lowering of the upper body. What they describe sounds like wing flicking and that's usually from a dietary issue (too much protein and/or too much fat and/or not enough fresh produce -fiber).

He occasionally flicks his wings for no apparent reason while he's in the cage, but generally it's after I've got him to do his morning/evening flaps (he can't fly yet, so I get him to perch on my hand and either manipulate his wings or move quickly to get him to flap his wings- I don't want to him to end up with muscle atrophy from not moving his wings). After his wing excercise, I put him back into his cage, and watch as he perches for a bit, twitching his wings in a slightly irritable fashion. As I mentioned before, his chewed wing feathers are slightly pointy and scratchy so I figure he's just uncomfortable and trying to put them back into place.

He's stopped chewing now, his stomach feather are growing in well, his wing feathers are just being a bit slow.
