Ozzie has just been sick - advice please

Postby Wendy40 » Tue Jul 22, 2014 1:25 pm

We have just got home from work. Ozzie greeted us in his usual way and came over instantly to front of cage. Done his little hang upside down thing on side of cage before being let out. Flew over to us and then whilst sitting on my shoulder was sick. It had no food in it pure it was clear in colour he flew flew over to his daddy and whilst on his hand kind of bobbed his head up and down and was sick again. Why? Advice needed please.

Is he regurgitating (bobbing head up and down on purpose and carefully depositing what he brings up somewhere) or vomiting (kind of projectile vomit with it ending up all over the place, even on his face and/or chest)? The first is hormones, the second is sickness.

From your description of this event I am not sure that Ozzie was sick. Although I have no explaination for it being clear, unless he had recently had a drink of water, it sounds to me like regurgitation and that is a normal thing.
watch to see what happens if he gives a repeat performance of this vomiting is a violent process and will probably get his feathers wet while regurgitation is a gentle process.
If he is vomiting, my advice is to keep him warm and get him to a vet asap as he is deathly ill.

Wendy, in case you didn't catch it, regurgitating is what birds do to feed each other and is usually a sign of affection. So if that's what happened, congratulations! Nothing is wrong, Ozzie loves you. Vomiting is much more serious, as Wolf and Pajarita said, so in that case get Ozzie to the vet. Please let us know which it was.

It was not projected, hard to describe to be honest, on my shoulder it was kind of like he was placing it somewhere and the same on daddy's hand. On my shoulder we could not see if his head was bobbing up and down but on daddy's hand it definitely was. It was clear, not runny as such, and none of it went over himself, it was also like he was doing it slowly. Oddly enough it also kind of smelt a little bit like sick. Not sure if any of this makes sense but I hope it does.

Still sounds like regurgitation to me at this point. What did he have to eat prior to this? The lack of color could be because of the digestive process, I think although most of that occurs further down the line. Just keep an eye on him and note anything that differs from his normal actions.

I agree it sounds like regurgitation, whilst its nice your parrot is bonded to you it isnt something you want to encourage, same for any other sexual behaviours that might get displayed.
