Newly Fledged Amazon Not Eating

Postby Birdie514 » Wed Jul 23, 2014 12:05 am

Hi,
I purchased a blue front amazon when it was 4.5wks old and it is the first time I have handfed a bird. I will say it has been a very stressful time for me because of everything that can go wrong. I will never purchase an unweaned bird again. Anway, Kiwi is 12 wks old and just flew for the first time yesterday. He has not been interested in eating. I took him to the vet a couple weeks ago and she said he had more bacteria than she would like to see in is crop and prescribed him antibiotics. I have been offering him formula and he takes very little of it. I have also offered him sweet potato, broccoli, pellets, corn, strawberries and cheerios. He does not seem to like any of it. He will put the pellets in is mouth but it doesnt seem like hes eating any. Is it normal for them to not hardly eat when they fledge? He also has been passing gas a lot when he does poop.I will be making a call to the vet but wanted to see if anyone can offer advice.

Not normal he needs to see the bird doctor ASAP! Just my opinion. With the trouble that you have had, if it were me I would have already been camping on AV door step.

"Passing gas"? What do you mean by that, exactly? Because birds don't pass gas like mammals do. When they do have gas, no gas actually comes out. All you see is 'spongy' looking poop (it has holes in it, as if it had had bubbles) and, when this happens, it's sign of a medical problem which you already know the bird has as it's not eating. Please take it back to the avian vet asap because a baby bird which does not want to eat is a VERY sick little bird.

In case you need a third vote, here it is: get Kiwi to the AV asap! If anything, flying should make a bird hungry. And there are SO many things that can go wrong with hand feeding, and baby birds can be gone so fast. Please keep us posted on how Kiwi is doing.
