My parrots favorites are corn on the cob, apples, celery, pomegranate and blackberries but they also like red papaya, mangoes, bananas, oranges, blueberries, strawberries, and lot of other fruits and vegetables.

lily loves tater tots, fries, bread sticks, and her food...
i think i will stick with her food and bread sticks for a more healthy diet. the starchy stuff will be a treat.

The problem with fries and tater tots doesn't lie in the starchy nature of the potato but in the salt and oil used in them. They are not good for your birds.

Tater tots, French fries and breadsticks? OUCH! Please don't feed her that crap any more! Birds cannot get any prepared human food. NONE! You can feed them organic (they need to be organic) potatoes boiled or baked (always with the skin on) with a bit of olive oil drizzled on them (mine love the little red potatoes prepared this way) or baked fries (mine love the sweet potato ones made nice and crispy) and birdie bread (made especially for them with whole grain flours, veggies, etc) but commercially prepared human food is a no-no.

I wholeheartedly agree, comercially prepared human food should be a BIG no-no for humans as well!

Birds should have FRESH veggies and fruits, the occasional grain (quinoa, brown rice, etc) and of course whatever pellet you're feeding them (as opposed to an all-seed diet, which is bad). You can give nuts, seeds, small pieces of boiled lean chicken or boiled eggs as treats.

I don't even give things like tater tots and bread sticks as a treat. There is NO value to them for your bird. Think of all the salt, processed ingredients, carbs, oils, fats, artificial preservatives, etc in those products.

Chubby loves steamed sweet potato, carrots, red/green/yellow peppers, jalapenos, mango, brocolli, steamed kale, beets, brussel sprouts, sprouted lentils, peas,WELL cooked beans (pinto and black), berries (especially blueberries), etc. He isn't a picky eater. Sometimes I also add turmeric and other spices to his food sparingly, like cayenne, fresh basil, and cumin.

Please re-think feeding your birds all those processed products and stick to whole, nutritious fruits and veggies. Also stay away from avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, mushrooms, garlic, and onions.

I don't agree with ever feeding a herbivore meat. They certainly don't need it for anything so all it does is give them high cholesterol with the corresponding health issues this implies.

Corsair adores pomegranate seeds, all kinds of berries, and red grapes. Veggies she eats after her favorites are gone.

She likes to dump everything in a water bowl and go bobbing for breakfast.

Pajarita I said I give it as an occasional treat, not a meal. Sometimes I'll give him a bite of boiled chicken when I do make it. Which is rare. Also, don't wild parrots sometimes eat insects?

Parrots are not insectivores, they don't have the beak for it. They might end up ingesting a teeny, tiny bug, maggot, worm or a part of it when they eat a fruit but I think it's safe to say that this does not happen more than a couple of times a year and, besides (and this is the most important part), insect flesh does not contain any bad cholesterol while chicken does - as well as antibiotics and hormones unless you feed them free-range, vegetarian and organically-fed chicken.

Lots of good treats you can feed them instead of something that does not 'add' anything to their health in terms of nutrition and all it ends doing is 'adding' something bad for them (the biggest problem with bad cholesterol and parrots is that, because they are not supposed to consume it, nature did not give them a mechanism to get rid of it so any little bit is bad and that's how you now have 30 year old birds that have cardiovascular problems because of it -and these problems are practically impossible to treat in parrots because we don't have good medicines for them -the ones we have are for mammals and have side effects that are real bad for parrots).

Lots of people still feed their parrots meat. I used to do it myself many years ago when I did not know any better. Back then, we did not know anything about parrots physiology and diets and had no supplements so the birds got sick from avitaminosis and hypocalcemia and died young. Breeders discovered that, if you fed them meat, they lasted longer (because of the vit D3 and vit A in it) and we thought they were omnivorous instead of herbivores so we all did it. But, then, we also gave fed them seeds, French fries, white bread and all kinds of terribly unhealthy food for them, kept them in ridiculously small cages with a single dowel in the middle and no toys, and under a human light schedule... we just did not know any better. Thankfully, now we do.
