New Senegal!!!!

Postby river-7 » Sun Jul 27, 2014 7:14 pm

Hi; All; Just got a baby and he was brought to me under bad conditions. I have had him since the 24th of july/2014. He has been badly treated by this breeder he came from.I was told he was 9-weeks old but he seems to be more like 6-weeks old. He has not stopped eating since I got him. He was delivered to me in the trunk of a car coming a long way to get to me.The breeder pounded the carring case-I guess to make sure the baby was alive. He didn't now it but I was watching him from my balcony.I had to take him after that. He gave him to me very roughly and the babies heart was just pounding. But I am happy to say he has a great home where he will never be treated badly again. And he is responding soo well. His wings has been cut and not allowed to fledge so he will fall off of his perch at times. I have that covered and so doe's he.I put a flannel blanket on the bottom so he don't get hurt. I am hand feeding him a couple of times a day as he is eating a lot of veggies. And when he falls he runs up his big ladder to get up. He was feeding him a bad food.So I have him on a good seed and a lot of veggies plus hand feeding 2-times for the day-Should he get more??? He seems content with that. I fill his veggie bowls at least 3-4-times a day. And he gets a bowl to go to bed with.He seems really food deprived and I want him to know there is plenty of it. And he gets a few nuts for a good boy.I have sennie's before so I know he is very young. But I am open to all suggestions. And I bought him a cage to go on my balcony with me for some much needed natural UVB rays. Thanks to all that respond River-7

It sounds like you are doing a great job of taking care of your new little one, but for the sake of clarity could you tell us what you are hand feeding as that could be several different things. The veggies are great, though a little fruit thrown in might be good as well. I am thinking that being as young as you are saying that he may need more of the hand feeding / weaning food as he sounds like he is still hungry.

Hi; Wolf; And thanks for your response; I am feeding Kaytee Exact.Choice between Hagen or Kaytee. We don't have very much of a choice over here[Canada] Last night he went to sleep right after sundown and was very contented .Still sleeping so far this am. But I will be getting him up soon.I can get some Higgins hand feeding formula but remember this was very quick. I had a choice of 2-at the time.So I will have to go quit a long way to get it and that won't be until next week and babie's got to eat until then lol.I have thought about trying 3-times a day as he has pin feathers on his head which makes me think he's quit young. Not fully feathered.I don't want to make him sick. I have to weigh him and if someone will tell me how to post a pic I will try so that it will help you to help us. He's only taking about 5ml. at a time so i'm thinking he's satisfied.I also can't get Rodybush until next week Big birdie shopping then. As I go to parrotdise perch, to purchase food as nut's are orgainic and everything is birdie safe. Toys food ect. It's been awhile since I had a baby sennie and he's just a sweet sweet baby boy,Not even banded.Just a trow away bird but his Mommie has got him now. No more bad times for baby.I talk to him a lot and tell him Mommie loves you and no more bad times in your little life for you.You are now home to stay and be treated properly.I am so happy he is responding to me. I took him out for a few minutes, last night and held him and then put him in as I didn't want to scare him and he seemed to enjoy trying to flap his wings as they are cut too.but I was there to catch him. He seems very fearless, if he falls- he jumps up and runs up his long ladder to get to his favourite perch. So he's 1-smart baby-I have called him 'ZUESS" He seems to like it. Even when I am on computer he talks to me and I to him. When I went out to get him a few things -When I came back in he was soo happy that I walked right to him and told him I was home.He peeped at me.Last night before bed he talked up a storm just going on, and on. Seems to be a very happy boy.Well Wolf; There you have it now any more advise please and thanks.Sorry I plan to add some fruit so far I have a gagla apple for him and I don't want to give too much fruit until he's a little older.River-7

Welcome river-7! I have no advice, because it sounds like you know a lot more about baby Senegals than I do. I look forward to learning from your posts.

Sounds to me like you have it pretty much all together and are doing fine. Glad to hear that he is doing so well and has someone who care for him the way that you do.

Update; on baby ZUESS; He is talking away afternoons, and evening and just going on and on.He seems like such a happy little guy. And hand feeding 3-times for the day. As soon as he see's the syringe coming he steps into my hand-So with out knowing he's already starting to step up.Loves carrott's, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and everything in between. I am going to cook some beans for him and see how he likes those. He went to bed @ 7-30-pm last night as I like him to get at least 12-14 hours sleep and he's just wonderful and I am so very proud of him.A friend came over yesterday and he knew this person was strange and a man so he did not like it. I presume it was a man that treated him badly. He has learned to give kiss's and very gentle as not to pinch. And he sit's on my chest for a little while before he goe's to bed and I tell him how much I love him. When he doe's go to bed he is very happy. Will update again-River-7 :senegal:

Have you tried to just put his soft handfeeding food in a dish to see if he would eat it that way? I would wager that at his age that he will and at least in my mind it is safer for him too. you know what you are doing, I think, but syringes and birds and people all together worries me a bit.

No, no, syringes are my preferred method of handfeeding. You need to know what you are doing or you can end up having the baby aspirate but they are a very practical tool.

Yes, soft foods are in order - forget about nuts and seeds for now, prepare a couple of types of soft food for him and put them in his cage fresh twice a day.

Also, please take him to an avian vet for a complete check-up because, for one thing, all new birds need to be checked and, for another, it doesn't sound as if the breeder was a responsible or trustworthy person and it worries me that he falls from his perch. In the meantime, put the perches real close to the bottom of the cage.

Syringes are great in experienced hands but I worry because of all the people that think they can do it right off without properly learning to do it first. It does not sound like this is the case here but I worry anyway, it is apparently in my nature, surprise to me more than anyone else.

Well to ease everyone's mind=I have had babies before and yes I have hand fed using a syringe and spoon so i'm not a stranger to it. And I have a blanket on bottom of his cage in case he falls again. If I took his veggies away he would be heart broken. He is now making a game of running up and down his ladder runs to bottom in and out of rungs[large ladder] and up again. I really wish I could upload pics and show you his set up and I am sure you would all approve-I know he certainly doe's.He is showing more interest in toys. Tried to go for a little fly and with his wings being cut was not successful. He doe's have a vet appointment in 3-weeks. As aviain vet said to let him settle and get used to things before bringing him in as long as he was not sick, Which he appears to be very healthy.Again to ease everyone's mind my Senegal's before bred in my living room and I had 5-babie's to feed at the age of 2-1/2-weeks old as daddy was trying to kill mom and babie's. Nasty Daddy that was.And cockateil's, parrolet's, linnie's,alexandrine's conure's and I have 7-conure's coming this week to be fed and trained this week. Any way a bit of my history and I am a senior not young. My baby Zuess kind of takes the syringe all on his own and I just don't want him to be forced weaned. He seems to know how much he wants and then stops on his own., when he's done.Senegals are usually fed until 12-weeks properly. Then some will let go earlier and some will take the full 12-weeks.All his perche's are low as his dishes, and blanket on ground but he only fell once now he appears very sure footed and playful going in and out the runges of ladder. The ladder's I bought are big as I wanted him to learn how to play on and in them. Mission accomplisted. and to be able to reach his food dishes easier.I once new a breeder who lost a baby because dishes were to high and he starved to death.[Not a good breeder].Well now another post to update on 'Baby 'Zuess' improvement. river-7 :senegal:
