Parrot Bakery

Postby Tman007 » Fri Aug 01, 2014 3:34 pm

Well it's noon so Amos and Andy have their fruit. And while they are eating I am in the kichen baking up some parrot muffins. I have this cookbook so I thought I would try to cook up a little treat. just some corn bread meal a few blueberries and some oats.( good oats no red#5 or yellow this or green that just good old oats). I found a place in town that sells just parrot food and toys thats it. No parrots. Just w2hat you need for them. The woman is great she has her stuff together. :gcc: :jenday:

Nice, let us know how they came out. Can you freeze them for later use as well if you bake to many?

My birds don't really like things done with baking powder... I don't really know why because everybody seems to give them to their birds - unless it's that they are spoiled by my birdie bread which is made with yeast so it comes out much denser than anything made with baking powder.

Well it worked out ok they ate some of it. I think next batch I will put more oats and stuff in it. This time was just blueberries and some oats. What I use is the Jiffy mix. So I just add milk and one egg.

Oh, no, no, no Jiffy mix, please! Corn has one of the highest aflatoxin levels (very high propensity for aspergillus) and you simply have no way of knowing how long ago that corn was dried, ground, packaged or has been sitting on the supermarket shelf. It's way too risky PLUS it has all kinds of things that are bad for them. These are the ingredients:

WHEAT FLOUR, DEGERMINATED YELLOW CORN MEAL, SUGAR, ANIMAL SHORTENING (CONTAINS ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING: LARD, HYDROGENATED LARD, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED LARD), contains less than 2% of each of the following: BAKING SODA, SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SALT, WHEAT STARCH, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, BHT PRESERVATIVE, TOCOPHEROL PRESERVATIVE, CITRIC ACID PRESERVATIVE, BHA PRESERVATIVE, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID, SILICON DIOXIDE

The ones in red are not good for them and the ones in orange are completely unnecessary.

If you are going to use baking powder, it has to be the non-aluminum one. And, if you want to make corn muffins, all you have to do is use 1/2 cup corn meal with 1 cup unbleached wheat flour, one teaspoonful of non-aluminum baking powder, a bit of olive oil (omega 3), fruit juice and add whatever other goodies you want to it. You don't need eggs or milk, either.

Tell me what you think. I went to a health food store and bought all organic grain, ( red lentils, barley, oat groats, rye, brown rice, buckwheat, quinoa , whole wheat. ). Put them through a mill and made flour out of each. Took equal amounts for a total of 255 grams (1/2 lb) , added some chopped pecans, 1 tbsp red palm oil, water and an egg and a tbsp baking powder. Made little muffins and my birds love it. Will make further ones with different add on's other than pecans. Any suggestions?

Make certain that the baking powder is aluminum free and perhaps change the red palm oil out for extra virgin olive oil due to cholesterol in the red palm oil.

Wolf,

I think you are thinking of palm kernel oil. Red Palm Oil is high in Beta Carotene, vit E, and coQ10. Great antioxidant properties.
